Nebraska’s offense is getting a familiar piece back at exactly the right time.
Janiran Bonner missed the Huskers’ 2025 season after tearing his ACL in the first game, but he’s back healthy as Nebraska heads into 2026 with plenty of returning offensive talent. The senior remains one of the more intriguing pieces on the roster because he doesn’t fit neatly into one box. That’s part of what makes him valuable.
After Friday’s practice, Nebraska’s eighth of fall camp, Bonner was asked about his recovery and how he handled the injury. The bigger moment came when he was pressed on his role.
“Do you consider yourself a tight end or wide receiver?” Bonner was asked.
His answer was direct: “I consider myself an athlete. ... I can do whatever coach needs me to do and do whatever the team needs me to do so we can be successful out there.”
That kind of flexibility has long been Bonner’s calling card. He has 13 career receptions for 76 yards and 8 career rushes for 24 yards, and Nebraska has used him at wide receiver, tight end and fullback. He can line up as a ball-carrier, help as a blocker and move around enough to give the offense options it didn’t have without him.
Wide receivers coach Daikel Shorts made it clear Friday that Nebraska feels that loss and values what Bonner brings back.
“He's basically his own position offensively. ... When you get a guy like that back, it definitely improves the offense. ...
From a physicality standpoint, one, and just having him out there is like a security blanket as a coach. ... He's a guy that's always gonna give a relentless effort.”
The production so far doesn’t jump off the page. Bonner has averaged three yards per carry and 5.8 yards per reception, and those numbers reflect limited opportunities.
But Nebraska sees more than the stat line. A four-star wideout coming out of Georgia, Bonner has the kind of talent that could still show up in a bigger way once Holgorsen starts deploying him.
For now, the biggest guarantee is that the offensive coordinator will use him.
Bonner said his rehab is in a good place.
“I feel pretty good. ... It took a while for me to actually feel comfortable, for me to like run pretty smoothly. ... I don't really have a time frame (for how long it took), but it took a little bit.”
“Pretty good” may not sound as strong as a full-on declaration, but Bonner also said he’s ready to help wherever Nebraska needs him. He reinforced that point later as well.
“I'm just gonna give it whatever I got. Just go out there and do whatever for him (Holgorsen).”
Bonner also spoke with Jessica Coody on the Huskers Radio Network about Nebraska’s offense and where it still needs to go. He and the rest of the receivers are working with a new quarterback in veteran UNLV transfer Anthony Colandrea, who adds a dual-threat element in Lincoln.
“We're just gonna keep doing what we do and just keep taking it day by day. We're not in a rush. ... Gonna keep practicing our routine plays and keep perfecting that so we can showcase that when it comes September fifth.”
Nebraska has time to keep sharpening things, and it has veteran pieces to lean on while it does. Bonner is one of them, and the Huskers are clearly glad to have him back.
