Nebraska’s 2026 slate leaves no hiding place.
Sports Illustrated’s preseason College Football Top 25 puts five of the Cornhuskers’ opponents inside the national rankings, and three of them land in the top five. For Matt Rhule’s team, that means the margin for error is going to be thin from the jump.
Oregon comes in at No. 2, Indiana at No. 4 and Ohio State at No. 5, all three after making the College Football Playoff a season ago.
Washington checks in at No. 19, while Iowa sits at No. 25 after both finished 9-4 in 2025. Put all five together and those opponents went a combined 59-12 last fall.
That’s a steep climb for a Nebraska program that hasn’t won nine games in a season since 2016, when Mike Riley was the head coach. Over the last 10 years, the Huskers have totaled 51 wins.
And if you look beyond Sports Illustrated, the picture doesn’t get much softer. ESPN’s Football Power Index has Nebraska scheduled to face four teams in its top 25 and six in its top 40.
The FPI list breaks down like this: No. 1 Ohio State, No.
4 Oregon, No. 6 Indiana, No.
25 Iowa, No. 26 Washington, No.
39 Illinois, No. 61 Maryland, No.
65 Michigan State, No. 67 Rutgers, No.
97 Ohio, No. 123 Bowling Green and FCS North Dakota.
Nebraska also hasn’t beaten a ranked opponent since Oregon in 2016. This fall, nearly half of its regular-season games will offer a chance to change that. There’s plenty wrapped up in that reality, good and bad, but the schedule is what it is.
Rhule, though, doesn’t sound like a coach trying to dodge it. He indicated that Nebraska’s transfer-portal additions were brought in with this exact kind of schedule in mind, and that same pitch likely helped with the players the staff kept in the fold.
So the Huskers enter 2026 with a clear test in front of them. On paper, this is the toughest schedule Nebraska has faced under Rhule. If this really is the best version of the team, the calendar is giving the Huskers a direct shot to prove it.
