Nebraska walked away from Saturday night’s 34-7 win over North Dakota with a 3-0 record and another blowout on the ledger, but the mood in Lincoln is not exactly carefree. The concern centers on Carter Nelson, who left the game in obvious discomfort and may be facing a much bigger setback than the Cornhuskers want to hear about.
Nelson was helped to the locker room by Nebraska’s training staff, and it did not look like he could put any weight on his left leg. That alone was alarming. The sight of him later back on the sideline with a brace on his knee and crutches only made things look worse.
Jahsear Whittington also exited before the game ended, and he was seen holding his hand after one play. But Nelson’s situation is the one that carries the most weight, especially because it threatens to interrupt a career that has already had more stops and starts than Nebraska hoped for.
The injury concern is less about what Nebraska loses on offense right now. Nelson’s role has been limited through the early part of 2026. The bigger issue is what another injury would mean for the native Nebraskan, who has yet to get fully rolling in his college career.
As a true freshman in 2024, Nelson appeared in all 13 games but finished with 10 catches for 86 yards and one touchdown. Last season, he again played in all 13 games, but his production dipped to just 2 receptions for 11 yards. He did make a bigger impact on special teams, returning a blocked punt 3 yards for a touchdown against Michigan State.
Over the offseason, Nelson had a procedure and missed spring practice. The hope was that a strong fall would finally lead to a more meaningful role in 2026.
He entered this season drawing praise for looking the part at tight end while backing up potential All-American Luke Lindenmeyer. So far, though, his only catch has been a 6-yard reception against North Dakota, and that’s the play on which he may have hurt his knee.
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule did not explain why Nelson or Whittington left early, but he is scheduled to speak again on Monday and could provide more clarity then.

Nebraska Handled Business But One Big Ten Concern Still Lingers
Nebraska took care of business against North Dakota, rolling to a 34-7 win in a game it controlled from the opening stretch. The Huskers piled up 496 total yards, held North Dakota to 205, and spent most of the afternoon looking every bit like the more physical, more organized team. Jamal Rule set the tone on the ground with 119 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Nebraska scored on five of its first eight drives before the reserves finished things off in the fourth quarter.
Still, even in a comfortable victory, there was one Big Ten-sized question lingering in the background. North Dakota did not cross the 200-yard mark until the final play, which speaks well of Nebraskas defense, but the bigger concern is whether this kind of efficiency and control will translate once the competition tightens and the margin for error disappears. Nebraska Defense Shows A Pregame Twist Fans Will Want To See
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade were among the familiar faces at Memorial Stadium as Nebraska took the field, but the more interesting pregame note for Cornhuskers fans came on the defensive side. Edge defender Jordan Ochoa was out because of injury, while Caleb Benning is expected to be available on special teams after working his way back from his own injury, giving Nebraska a little more stability in one area and a notable absence in another.
Beyond that, the defensive lineup had a mix of starters and rotation pieces worth watching, including Williams Nwaneri, David Hffken, Dexter Foster, Owen Chambliss, Vincent Shavers, Dawson Merritt, Victor Evans, Andrew Marshall and Danny Odem.
