Rob Aurich didn’t hand out a blueprint on the Nebraska Football Coaches Show, but he did leave enough clues to show how the Blackshirts are being built.
The Nebraska defensive coordinator was careful not to reveal too much, making it clear the Huskers aren’t putting everything on the table in the first couple weeks. Still, he gave Kyle Crooks a pretty useful look at what matters most to him - the pieces, the roles and the numbers that tell him the defense is headed in the right direction.
One of the biggest revelations centered on Donovan Jones and why his role at nickel matters so much. Aurich’s point was simple: Jones helps Nebraska keep the structure it wants even when offenses get bigger.
That showed up last week against 12 personnel, when Nebraska saw 38 to 45 snaps with two tight ends on the field. Aurich said Jones played about 85% of those snaps, which lets the Huskers avoid a familiar tradeoff. Without that kind of player, a defense has to decide whether to stay in nickel and risk getting pushed around or bring in a heavier body and give up some coverage flexibility.
With Jones, Nebraska doesn’t have to choose.
Aurich said a lot of NFL defenses are leaning nickel against 12 personnel for the same reason: it preserves two-high safety looks and keeps more complexity available in the package. That kind of flexibility is a big deal for a defense trying to hold its shape no matter what an offense puts on the field.
Aurich also pointed to the broader value of being selective with what the defense carries into a play, even if he stopped short of saying Nebraska is hiding anything dramatic. The idea is less about secrecy and more about efficiency - knowing what to keep in the call sheet and what to leave out.
Beyond Jones and the nickel package, Aurich offered enough to help explain other parts of the defense too, including how length can affect the pass rush, why one starter “grinded through the mud” this spring, and why certain corners earn trust. He also talked about the numbers he watches to decide whether the whole thing is working.
He didn’t give away the store. But he did give a clearer picture of the people and principles driving Nebraska’s defense.

A three-star prospect with offers from Nebraska and Illinois among others, Herrick was one of the younger passers Nebraska was tracking as it tried to build out its future quarterback board.
Instead, Herrick is headed to Illinois, a choice that adds another early recruiting miss for Nebraska at a position it always has to treat as a priority. Nebraska Faces A Real Test Fans Can't Ignore Against North Dakota
Nebraskas next test comes against a North Dakota team that has earned real attention, not just because it is a solid FCS program, but because it brings one of the countrys better offenses into Lincoln. The Cornhuskers have their own momentum on that side of the ball, with Anthony Colandrea fresh off Big Ten Player of the Week honors and a run game that has been doing plenty of the heavy lifting while the points keep piling up.
Even so, this matchup still asks a few questions of Nebraskas defense, especially against an opponent ranked sixth at its level and capable of making teams work for every stop.
