Halloween night is getting a Nebraska makeover.
The Huskers will roll out alternate uniforms for their Oct. 31 matchup with Washington, leaning into a black-and-red look for what’s being framed as a “Monsters Ball” at Memorial Stadium. The program is clearly hoping for another big-stage atmosphere under the lights, with the kind of crowd and production that turns a night game into an event.
That part of the night will not be in short supply. The Huskers already have the pump-up video business covered, and the marketing crew leaned all the way into the moment. The school is calling the theme “OUR RED BURNS BRIGHTER,” and the timing fits the setting as Nebraska tries to make Halloween night feel like more than just another game.
Washington returns to Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2011, and the recent history between the two programs has plenty of Nebraska fans remembering the good ones. There was the 56-21 win over the Huskies in 2010, when the Huskers piled up 533 yards of offense and got three 100-yard rushers led by Taylor Martinez.
Then came a bowl rematch in which Nebraska’s offense stalled behind an injured Martinez in a 17-9 loss. In the next meeting, though, the Huskers won the rubber match 51-38 behind 309 rushing yards, with Rex Burkhead and Martinez leading the way.
Nebraska is also trying to tap into a little Halloween luck. The Huskers are 17-2 in games played on All Hallow’s Eve, a run that includes the 52-7 win over Colorado in 1992 and the 25-21 upset of Oklahoma in 1959. The 20-16 loss to Texas also came on Halloween, but the source material makes clear how that one is remembered.
The setup matters even more because of what comes before it. Nebraska will have just finished consecutive games against Indiana at home and Oregon in Eugene, with a bye week waiting after the Ducks. That makes the Washington game feel like a chance to turn the page in a hurry.
As for the uniforms themselves, Nebraska went into detail on the design. The black base is meant to serve as a backdrop for metallic red accents inspired by flames, fireworks and the red glow that fills Memorial Stadium on game day. The school also tied the look to the stadium’s nighttime light shows, the fire tower flames in the end zone and the red fireworks above the North Stadium scoreboard.
There are more touches built into the jersey, too. The lower back panel includes a custom perforated Block “N” as a nod to the drone shows that have become part of the lead-in to the fourth quarter. Inside the collar, “A Winning Tradition” is stitched in as a tribute to Nebraska’s success in night games, alongside a traditional Block “N” on the back collar.
The black helmet brings another first: the Huskers script in metallic red. It also carries an “A Winning Tradition” emblem on the back, with a metallic red stripe on top featuring the crop row pattern as a nod to the state’s agricultural roots.
If Nebraska does its part on the field, Oct. 31 could be the kind of night the program is clearly trying to manufacture - loud, strange, and built for the lights.
