Nebraska’s backfield picture may be getting a major boost just as fall camp approaches.
Running back Mekhi Nelson, whose status had been in question for months after legal trouble in Florida this spring, appears to be on track to return for the 2026 season. There is still one more step in the process, but Wednesday brought the clearest sign yet that Nelson could be back with the Huskers soon.
The key update came from athletic director Troy Dannen, who told reporters in a brief meeting that Nebraska would not discipline Nelson and that he had been cleared by the Title IX office to return to the team. Because head coach Matt Rhule has not yet spoken publicly about the situation, one final decision still hangs over the running back’s availability.
Even so, the outlook looks increasingly positive. Andy Kendeigh of Lincoln television station KETV 7 reported that a source inside Nebraska said Nelson would play this season. The remaining question is whether Rhule will clear him for Week 1 or whether Nelson could sit out part of the 2026 season before eventually getting on the field.
The reason the situation has moved this way is straightforward: prosecutors in July declined to file official charges after Nelson’s arrest earlier this year in Florida. Dannen said that because there are no charges, Nelson has not violated Nebraska’s student-athlete code of conduct. That could open the door for Rhule to make him eligible to return to team activities right away.
Earlier reports this summer indicated Nelson had not been working out with Nebraska teammates while the university waited for the legal process to play out.
If he is fully available for camp, Nelson steps right into a crowded competition. Nebraska lost Emmett Johnson to the NFL Draft in the offseason, and Nelson is one of five backs in the mix to start. Isaiah Mozee, Jamal Rule, Kwinten Ives and Tikey Hayes, who joined in July from Iowa Western, are also in the race.
Nelson already gave Nebraska a glimpse of what he can do in the bowl game against Utah, when Johnson sat out after declaring for the NFL Draft. In the Las Vegas Bowl, Nelson rushed 12 times for 88 yards and a touchdown, including a 38-yard run. He also added 3 catches for 48 yards, showing he can contribute as more than just a runner.
Rhule is scheduled to speak at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday morning, and that should bring more clarity on whether Nelson will miss any time at all.
