Nebraska’s women’s soccer team wasted no time giving the season a jolt, opening with a 3-1 road win over Louisville on Wednesday, August 12. That fast start sends the Huskers into a four-game homestand beginning Sunday against South Dakota, with No. 2 Notre Dame waiting on the schedule next week.
There’s been plenty else happening around Nebraska, too, starting with a familiar face back in Lincoln. Former basketball player Kendall Blue returned to town to receive his diploma on Saturday, walking across the stage in cap and gown as one of several NU students graduating.
Blue’s trip back comes after a complicated year. He was part of a lawsuit against the NCAA over the 5-for-5 eligibility rule and the case was successful. Blue later entered the transfer portal, which means he would be eligible to play again in the 2026-27 season if he chooses to keep going.

Nebraska fans also got a reminder that a wager is a wager. Earlier this year, basketball analyst Jon Rothstein said he would buy Nebraska basketball fans beer if the Huskers made a run in the NCAA Tournament. They did, and Rothstein is now following through with a “Happy Hour” set for September 16, the same night Nebraska volleyball plays Creighton.

On the football side, linebacker Owen Chambliss added another honor to his resume by landing on the Butkus Award watch list Thursday. Chambliss earned the preseason recognition after a strong 2025 season at San Diego State, where he was a first-team All-Mountain West selection. He led SDSU with 110 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks.
Freshman running back Jamal Rule is also making noise. Dana Holgorsen said earlier this week that Rule will absolutely see the field this fall, and the running back was also listed among possible breakout players in the Big Ten.
The football buzz didn’t stop there. On Saturday, Emmett Johnson got his first real NFL action with the Kansas City Chiefs and made the most of it, finishing with 69 yards of total offense while playing most of the game. As he competes for the RB2 job behind Kenneth Walker III, he gave himself a strong argument.
Nebraska also added another name to its women’s flag football roster. London Jenkins, a wide receiver and defensive back at Fleming Island High School in Jacksonville, Florida, has signed with the program. She also stands out as a women’s basketball player.
And the Huskers are already setting the stage for late October. On Saturday, Nebraska announced that its October 31 game against Washington will be a Blackout game, and the school also revealed a new alternate uniform that builds off the all-black look it has used before.
