Nebraska’s perfect start on the field is starting to pay off where it matters just as much for the long haul: on the recruiting trail. The Huskers were able to impress one of their biggest future tight end targets over the weekend, and 2028 prospect Max Jones came away from Lincoln with Nebraska sitting near the top of his list.
Jones was among the recruits in town to watch Nebraska’s comeback win over Maryland on Saturday afternoon, and afterward he told On3’s Bryan Munson that he really liked what he saw on the visit. He still has several game-day trips lined up this fall, but the Huskers have already put themselves in a strong position.
A 4-star tight end in the 2028 class, Jones checks in at 6-foot-6 and 221 pounds. He plays at Parkway West High School in Ballwin, Missouri, after transferring from St.
John Vianney following his freshman season. His background goes beyond tight end, too, with experience at wide receiver and on defense and special teams.
Jones’ profile is still building, but it’s climbing. He’s ranked No. 312 overall in the 2028 class, No. 17 at tight end, and No. 5 in Missouri in the latest 247Sports Composite Rankings. Nebraska was the first Big Ten program to offer him back in April, and that early move has helped establish the Huskers as a real factor in his recruitment.
The list of schools involved is growing. Jones also holds offers from Arizona, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
For Nebraska, the interest in Jones fits a bigger push into Missouri under Matt Rhule, with assistant Jamar Mozee helping lead that effort. Mozee and his son Isaiah both come out of Missouri, and the staff has been working to reopen a pipeline that was a major one during the Tom Osborne days.
Jones has already shown he can produce. As a sophomore at Parkway West in 2025, he caught 39 passes for 419 yards and 7 touchdowns. Nebraska would love to see that kind of playmaking develop at tight end as the program looks ahead to life after Luke Lindemeyer moves on to the NFL.
There’s still plenty of recruiting ahead for Jones, who already has four more unofficial visits set for the 2026 season. He’ll go to Notre Dame on October 10 for his first trip to South Bend, then head to Arizona State on October 24.
After that, he plans to return to Kansas on November 7 and Minnesota on November 21. Nebraska, though, has already made a strong impression - and Jones is high on the list.

Matt Rhules TV Appearance Has Nebraska Fans Arguing Over Nothing
Matt Rhules surprise cameo in the season finale of HBO Maxs Lanterns gave Nebraska fans something a little different to talk about during the offseason. The appearance was filmed likely well before the season got rolling, so it didnt interfere with his work getting the Cornhuskers ready, but it still landed with enough visibility to turn a routine TV credit into a fresh round of fan discussion.
The reaction online split quickly, with some Nebraska supporters wondering whether the timing was worth the distraction and others happy to see their coach pop up in a high-profile series. For a program where every bit of attention gets magnified, it was the kind of harmless side story that still manages to spark an argument, even if theres nothing much behind it. [Read more 🡒]
Indiana Will Help Reveal What Nebraskas Hot Start Really Means
Nebraskas 5-0 start has bought the Huskers some breathing room, but it has not answered every question about what this team really is. The early record is clean, and the resilience shown in the recent win over Maryland offered another sign that the group can handle a little pressure, yet there is still a sense that the offense and defense have not both hit their stride at the same time.
The next stretch of Big Ten play should make the picture clearer, starting with Indiana. That matchup figures to tell a lot about whether Nebraskas unbeaten beginning is built on something sustainable or whether the first month has simply masked the kind of inconsistency that tends to get exposed once the conference schedule settles in. Matt Rhule Just Gave Nebraska Fans A Wild Midseason Flex
Matt Rhules latest appearance for Nebraska came far from Memorial Stadium, but it still gave Cornhuskers fans another reason to look twice. The Nebraska head coach popped up in the season finale of HBOs Lanterns, stepping in as a football coach in a scene with a character playing quarterback, a cameo that neatly connected the series back to the state and to the program.
Because Lanterns is set in Nebraska, Rhules turn on screen carries a little extra local flavor for a fan base that likes seeing its coach become part of the broader Nebraska conversation. HBO has not yet announced whether the show will return for a second season, so the cameo may stand as a fun one-off for now, even if it leaves viewers wondering whether the series has more room to keep the Cornhuskers in the picture.
