Nebraska's defense is gearing up for a big season, and they've made some significant moves to bolster their linebacker corps. The Huskers have added three new linebackers through the transfer portal, focusing on size and athleticism.
Defensive coordinator Rob Aurich emphasized the need to get bigger to compete in their conference, highlighting the additions of Dexter Foster and Owen Chambliss. Both stand at 6-3 and weigh 235 pounds, offering a blend of size and speed that promises to enhance the team's defensive capabilities.
Aurich's strategy is clear: to toughen up the linebacker group to face the conference's toughest opponents. The staff is also keen on the continued development of returning junior Vincent Shavers, who has been identified as a key player for Nebraska's defense. General manager Pat Stewart recently underscored Shavers' importance to the team.
Joining the ranks is 6-2, 225-pound Will Hawthorne, another portal addition. He'll be competing alongside second-year players like Dawson Merritt, Pierce Mooberry, and Christian Jones, who are all eager to make their mark this spring.
Chambliss, in particular, stands out as a model of success in Aurich's defense. Last season at San Diego State, he racked up 110 tackles, including 9.5 for losses.
After overcoming injuries the previous year, Chambliss made a strong comeback, focusing on enhancing his football IQ and proving his resilience on the field. "I wanted to show that I wasn't just an injury-prone player," Chambliss shared during a 'Sports Nightly' appearance.
"Working with Coach Aurich, I believe I showcased my intelligence and ability last season."
Chambliss isn't the only former Aztec making the move to Nebraska. Safety Dwayne McDougle also brings his experience to the Huskers, adding depth and leadership.
Aurich appreciates the leadership qualities these players bring, noting that their familiarity with his defensive system benefits the entire team. "They all have leadership potential," Aurich said.
"Bringing in players who have operated at a high level helps others learn quickly just by observing."
Both Chambliss and McDougle are expected to make an immediate impact, not just with their talent but by accelerating the team's overall comfort with the defensive scheme. With these strategic additions, Nebraska's defense is poised to tackle the challenges of the upcoming season head-on.
