Nebraska Gets A Key Friday Night Boost With One Big Question Left

Gunnar Gottula's anticipated return against Illinois brings crucial versatility to Nebraska's offensive line, bolstering their chances amid other significant injuries.

Gunnar Gottula appears set to give Nebraska a needed boost on Friday night against Illinois.

After earlier signs pointed to him sitting out, Gottula was not listed on Thursday night’s Big Ten availability report. With one more report still to come before kickoff, the Huskers seem to be trending toward getting him back on the offensive line. That would matter in a big way for Nebraska in what the source describes as an absolute must win game.

Gottula missed time after suffering a head injury at Oregon and had already been ruled out mid-week before the Washington game. If he does return, Nebraska gets some real flexibility up front, since he can line up at both tackle and guard.

The outlook for safety Jamir Conn is a little less certain, but it’s moving in the same direction. Nebraska defensive coordinator Rob Aurich said Conn had returned to practice earlier this week, though he still had a few boxes to check before being cleared.

"I think we have to go through a couple more checkmarks for him to be cleared," Aurich said. "But when we do get him back, he’ll be welcome."

Aurich also said Conn was in stretch lines on Monday.

"Didn't have a red penny on or anything. He was ready to go, so I don't know if he's fully cleared, but we're glad to have him back."

Conn was upgraded from doubtful to probable on Wednesday and remained probable Thursday night. Based on Aurich’s comments, it sounds like both Aurich and head coach Matt Rhule expect him to play at least some against Illinois.

Nebraska’s official list of players out for the game includes Anthony Jones, Larry Miles, Kahmir Prescott, Vincent Genatone, Jase Reynolds, Jacob Bower and Gabe Moore.

That group is largely made up of players who were already known to be done for the season, and most of them have not played a down in 2026. The biggest absence among them is Jones, the newest injury on the list. Nebraska could have used another body on the defensive line, especially with the Blackshirts needing to help carry the Huskers to a win.

Nebraska Volleyball Just Took A Recruiting Hit Fans Wont Ignore

A notable recruiting change hit Nebraska volleyball this week when Kendall Omoruyi, one of the top prospects in the 2027 class, announced she was moving her verbal commitment from Nebraska to Texas A&M. Omoruyi framed the decision around personal growth and spirituality, while also making sure to thank both programs for the role they played in her process.

For Nebraska, it is the kind of development that lands with extra weight because of how much long-term talent matters in a sport where roster building is constant and elite front-row players are so hard to replace. Texas A&M, fresh off its first national championship, now adds Omoruyi to an already strong group of middle blockers, while the Huskers are left to regroup and keep working the recruiting board. Nebraska Built A Memorial Stadium Look Fans Will Be Arguing About

Nebraska turned Memorial Stadium into a full Halloween stage for its blackout night game, and the field itself became part of the show. The end zones were painted black, a skull and crossbones sat at midfield, and the whole look gave the place a different feel from the usual home-game setup. It was the kind of one-night transformation that takes more than a few cans of paint and a good idea.

The process stretched across about a week and required multiple painting steps, with weather adding its own complications along the way. Planning for it started a year in advance, which says plenty about how much thought went into making the scene pop. Nebraska also intends to keep the tradition going, and there is already talk of pushing the field design even further next time. [Read more 🡒]

Nebraska Faces A Friday Night Test Fans Will Not Want To Miss

Nebraska heads into Friday night in Champaign with a chance to steady itself after a rough stretch, and the setting should only add to the spotlight. The Cornhuskers will meet Illinois at Memorial Stadium in a nationally televised game on Fox, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT and streaming available on Fubo, giving this one the feel of a late-week measuring stick for both programs.

The stakes are straightforward for Nebraska, which is trying to snap a three-game losing streak and get back on track before the season drifts any further. Illinois, meanwhile, brings momentum from a three-game winning streak, so the Cornhuskers are walking into a game where the energy, the stage and the form guide all point to a demanding night.
