Nebraska football fans have plenty to be excited about with Danny Odem in the mix. Despite some late recruitment whispers suggesting he might head elsewhere, Odem stayed true to the Huskers. While it remains to be seen if he'll secure a starting spot or significant playing time in 2026, his dedication to bulking up for Big Ten play is turning heads.
When Odem signed with Nebraska last December, he was a solid 180 pounds at six feet tall. Fast forward to this spring, and he's packed on nearly 20 pounds, bringing him close to the 200-pound mark.
This added muscle is enhancing his already impressive skills as an on-ball defender, making him a more formidable tackler-something the Nebraska coaches have certainly noticed. Position coach Addison Williams recently highlighted Odem as a strong contender for a starting position opposite Andrew Marshall.
"He's a guy that just wants to come to work and not worry about the expectations of being a five-star coming in," Williams remarked. "It’s been good to see him put his head down and work."
Odem's work ethic isn't just catching the attention of the coaching staff; his teammates are taking note too. Transfer wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer has seen firsthand what Odem brings to the table in practice.
"He’s definitely going to be one of those guys who stands out this year. He’s got that grit, I'm not gonna lie. You don't often see players ready to go in there head down and smack someone."
Head coach Matt Rhule echoed these sentiments, praising Odem's talent and potential to earn a starting role.
"Danny is really talented. He's a big player for a freshman.
He's competing to play. We didn't bring him here to sit.
He's humble, he works really hard, he's a gym rat, and when he goes out there, he likes to compete. He's certainly a guy who is in the mix."
With this kind of dedication and drive, Odem is poised to make a significant impact for the Huskers, giving fans plenty to look forward to this season.
