Nebraska Faces A Big Defensive Line Worry Before Indiana

Nebraska faces lineup uncertainties as a key defensive tackle's status complicates their strategy against Indiana.

Nebraska’s injury picture got a little more complicated Thursday, and the biggest new wrinkle sits right in the middle of the defensive front.

Defensive tackle Riley Van Poppel popped up on the Huskers’ report as questionable for Saturday’s game against Indiana, joining tight end Carter Nelson and linebacker Gage Stenger. Nelson and Stenger both moved up from doubtful on Wednesday to questionable, but Van Poppel is the name that stands out most with Nebraska getting ready for an Indiana rushing attack that ranks ninth in the nation and includes two backs averaging more than 100 yards per game.

Van Poppel has been one of Nebraska’s most-used interior linemen this season, logging 166 snaps, which is second on the team among interior defensive linemen behind only Jahsear Whittington. The fourth-year junior has produced seven tackles, tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with four, and sits second on the team with two sacks.

“I think I'm playing probably the best I have in four years right now,” Van Poppel said Tuesday after Nebraska's Week 4 win over Michigan State.

The Huskers still have five players listed as out, all of whom have been in that same category since Big Ten play began: wide receiver Larry Miles, defensive back Kahmir Prescott, linebackers Jase Reynolds and Jacob Bower, and defensive lineman Gabe Moore.

Indiana, meanwhile, enters the matchup in much better shape health-wise and is getting closer to full strength in a few spots on defense.

Cornerback A.J. Harris is not on the injury report and is expected to be available.

Harris won a starting job to begin the season, but the Penn State transfer was injured in the first quarter and has not played since Week 1. Fifth-year Jamari Sharpe and second-year Jaylen Bell have started the last two games at corner for the Hoosiers.

Indiana also has defensive end David Ndukwe back off the report after he missed last week’s game against Rutgers. Through four games this season, Ndukwe has six tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and a safety.

The Hoosiers have three players out: running back Khobie Martin, tight end Andrew Barker and cornerback Carson Williams. Barker started the last four games before getting hurt in last week’s win over Rutgers and will miss Saturday’s game against Nebraska. Martin has not played since Week 1, and Williams has been out since Week 3 because of injury.

Indiana wide receiver LeBron Bond is listed as questionable after sitting out the last four games. The true sophomore was expected to be in the two-deep at receiver this season, but he has not played since Week 1.

Nebraska Suddenly Has A Chance To End One Brutal Drought

Nebraska suddenly has a rare opening to change the tone of its season, and it comes with some national buzz attached. On ESPNs Get Up, analysts Will Compton and Taylor Lewan both pointed to the Cornhuskers as a team that could make things interesting against No. 7 Indiana, a matchup that already has plenty of attention because Nebraska has gone years without beating a ranked opponent.

That drought has stretched all the way back to 2016, and Nebraska heads into this one as a 7.5-point underdog, which is why the outside belief matters at all. Compton and Lewan pointed to the fan base and the players as reasons the Cornhuskers might finally be positioned to snap the skid, setting up a test that feels as much about belief as it does about rankings. Nebraskas First Test Will Reveal Plenty About This New-Look Team

Fridays exhibition against Saint Louis will be Nebraskas first real chance to show what this new-look group can do under game conditions. College basketballs preseason tuneups are often more about feel than results, but they still offer a useful snapshot, especially for a team trying to sort out its rotation and see how new pieces fit together before the games start counting.

The Cornhuskers are part of a loaded October 9 exhibition slate that also includes North Carolina meeting USC and Richmond visiting Virginia, giving fans an early look at several programs with fresh faces and new directions. For Nebraska, the focus is less on the final score than on how the roster responds, how the coaching staff deploys it, and what the first test reveals about the teams early identity. [Read more 🡒]

Nebraska Just Showed Why The Big Ten Keeps Chasing This Team

Nebraska kept rolling in Big Ten play with a straight-sets win over Indiana, and the numbers told the story of a team that looked sharp on both sides of the net. Harper Murray led the way with 11 kills, one ace, seven digs and two blocks, while Teraya Sigler added 10 kills and two blocks as Nebraska hit .379 overall and controlled the match from the outset.

The most interesting part came late, when Nebraska went to a new front-row lineup and tightened up its blocking even more. For a team that already brings the kind of firepower and depth that make conference opponents chase it all season, that kind of flexibility only adds to the problem for everyone else trying to catch up.
