Nebraska has locked in men’s basketball Coach Fred Hoiberg for the long haul, extending his contract through the 2031-32 season. This announcement from Athletic Director Troy Dannen comes as no surprise, given Hoiberg's impressive leadership this season. The Huskers have racked up 26 wins, including a record-breaking 15 victories in Big Ten Conference play.
“Fred Hoiberg is a tremendous representative of the University of Nebraska, the Lincoln community, and our state. We are extremely proud that he will continue to lead the Nebraska men’s basketball program well into the future,” Dannen stated.
He highlighted Hoiberg's methodical building of the program, noting Nebraska's strong positioning in both conference and national competition. Hoiberg is widely respected in the college basketball community, and his achievements are turning heads across the sport.
The Huskers are making history with their third consecutive 20+ win season, a first for the school. They head into the Big Ten Tournament with a 26-5 record, holding the ninth spot in the latest AP and Coaches polls.
Earlier in the season, they reached an all-time high national ranking of No. 5.
Nebraska's 26 wins this season tie the school record, while their 15 conference wins surpass the previous high of 13 set in 2017-18. The team finished tied for second in the Big Ten regular-season standings, marking their best finish since a runner-up spot in the Big Eight during the 1992-93 season.
Coach Hoiberg expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from Troy Dannen and Jeffrey Gold, acknowledging the strong ties his family has with the University of Nebraska. “The support we have received over the last seven years is truly remarkable.
We are blessed with world-class facilities, but the people are what make Nebraska special. Our goal is to continue building a program that our fans can embrace and have pride in because it represents the values of Nebraska,” Hoiberg said.
Hoiberg has guided Nebraska to postseason play in the past two seasons, including their first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade in 2023-24. They followed that with a victory in the inaugural College Basketball Crown in 2025, sparking a school-record 24-game win streak that included a perfect 20-0 start to the 2025-26 season.
Off the court, the Huskers are excelling academically with a team cumulative GPA of 3.340, the highest in program history. Every team member has been named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship team for two consecutive years, underscoring the program's commitment to excellence beyond basketball.
As the Huskers gear up for the Big Ten Tournament, they’re set to hit the court this Friday evening at 5:30 p.m., ready to add another chapter to their remarkable season.
