Nebraska heads into Saturday’s game against Bowling Green with one quarterback already giving Huskers fans plenty to like.
Anthony Colandrea’s debut in a Nebraska uniform was the kind of opener that shows why Matt Rhule and the Huskers pursued him in the transfer portal. The former UNLV quarterback guided Nebraska to a 49-21 win over Ohio in Week 1, and he did it with a mix of playmaking and poise that stood out beyond the final score.
Colandrea finished 18 of 32 for 275 yards and three passing touchdowns, then added another score on the ground. He also ran 10 times for 23 yards and did not throw an interception. The completion rate wasn’t spotless at 56.3%, and there were a few throws he’d likely want back, but the big-picture impact was clear: he created explosive plays and kept drives alive.
The advanced numbers backed that up. Colandrea posted an 84.3 overall PFF grade, along with a 75.9 passing grade and a 78.8 rushing grade.
That overall mark was among the best on Nebraska’s offense in Week 1. He also turned five of seven scrambles or designed runs into first downs and went 6-for-8 on third-down passes, with five completions moving the chains.
Just as important, he protected the ball. That mattered after the turnover concerns that followed him from Virginia, where he threw 20 interceptions across two seasons. Against Ohio, he played aggressively without giving the ball away, the same style that helped him earn Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year honors at UNLV last season.
Bowling Green is bringing a very different quarterback profile to Lincoln.
Jay Kastantin spent the previous three seasons at Division II Assumption before transferring to Bowling Green this offseason, and the 6-foot-4, 235-pound quarterback made his FBS debut against Tarleton State on Saturday. On paper, the numbers were clean.
Kastantin completed 24 of 30 passes for 262 yards, good for an 80% completion percentage and 8.7 yards per attempt. He also avoided an interception and ran for 17 yards.
But the box score didn’t turn into points. Kastantin didn’t throw or rush for a touchdown, and Bowling Green lost 20-13 after falling behind 17-0. The Falcons did make a push late, reaching the Tarleton State eight-yard line as time expired, but the comeback came up short.
The grading told a less flattering story than the stat line. Kastantin earned a 61.8 overall PFF grade, including a 68.0 passing grade and a 50.6 rushing grade.
That’s the kind of split that shows why raw completion percentage can be deceiving. The production looked efficient, but the evaluation suggested a performance with more noise underneath the surface.
