Nebraska Sets the Stage for Women's Flag Football with Historic Coaching Duo
In a groundbreaking move, Nebraska Athletics has announced Liz Sowers as the head coach for its inaugural women's flag football team, marking a significant milestone in the program's history. Liz, a five-time national champion coach, will be joined by her twin sister, Katie Sowers, who will take on the role of associate head coach.
The Sowers sisters are no strangers to success. They've been the driving force behind a championship-winning program at Ottawa University, an NAIA school in Kansas.
Their journey with Ottawa will conclude before they officially join the Huskers on June 1, setting the stage for Nebraska's first competitive season in spring 2028. This makes Nebraska the first Power Four school to embrace women's flag football as a varsity sport, a decision made back in January.
Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen expressed his excitement about the new additions, stating, "We are thrilled to bring Liz and Katie Sowers to Lincoln to build our women's flag football program. Their championship pedigree and experience with national teams are invaluable. They have a clear vision for what flag football can achieve at the University of Nebraska and recognize the immense opportunities it presents for young women in college sports."
Liz Sowers' coaching resume is nothing short of impressive. With an 88-8 career record and three KCAC Coach of the Year titles, she's poised to set a high standard for the program.
"This is the start of a new era, and we intend to set the standard," Liz shared. "Leading the first flag football program at Nebraska is an honor, and doing it alongside my twin sister in a place with such rich tradition makes it even more meaningful.
We want young girls across Nebraska to see this team and know there’s a future here for them."
Katie Sowers brings a wealth of experience from her time with three NFL teams: the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, and Atlanta Falcons. Her addition to the coaching staff underscores Nebraska's commitment to excellence.
"I am proud to join the Nebraska family as part of the first coaching staff in program history," Katie said. "This is a fanbase that lives and breathes excellence, and I can't wait to give this amazing fanbase another sport to rally behind."
With the Sowers sisters at the helm, Nebraska's women's flag football program is poised to make waves, offering a new avenue for female athletes and adding another chapter to the university's storied athletic tradition.
