Josh Hoover Answered Indianas Biggest Late-Game Question

Josh Hoover steps up with clutch plays to secure a narrow win for Indiana against a determined Nebraska squad.

Josh Hoover didn’t need a perfect afternoon to give Indiana the kind of moment every championship contender eventually needs. In a messy, wind-blown fight in Lincoln, he delivered the answer when Nebraska looked ready to break the game open.

Indiana escaped with a 20-17 win, and Hoover’s stat line was rough enough to back up how difficult the day was. He finished 12 of 22 through the air, easily his worst showing since arriving at Indiana.

A steady wind at Memorial Stadium kept knocking throws off course, sending some sails wide of open receivers down the sideline and leaving others short by as much as 10 yards. If not for those misses in the first half, Indiana may never have been forced into the kind of late-game scramble that Hoover eventually settled.

Nebraska did plenty to put itself in position to pull the upset. The Huskers controlled the ball and ran 83 plays to Indiana’s 44, but all that activity didn’t translate into enough points. Not until Anthony Colandrea broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run to put Nebraska ahead 17-6 with 12 minutes left did the stadium really feel like it might be slipping away from the Hoosiers.

That was the moment Indiana had to answer, and Hoover wasted no time. On the first play of the next possession, he hit Nick Marsh on an RPO for a 75-yard touchdown. One snap, one strike, and the noise in the building flipped from celebration to tension.

Curt Cignetti had pointed to Indiana’s defense and run game during the offseason after Sonny Dykes’ criticism about turnovers, saying he had something at Indiana he never had at TCU. The run game never showed up here, but the defense did enough to force Nebraska to punt after the long touchdown.

Indiana’s next scoring drive took a little longer, but the result was the same. On fourth-and-2, the Hoosiers went back to a play-action look that echoed the RPO from the previous touchdown.

Nebraska bit hard again. Hoover found both Nick Marsh and Charlie Becker wide open, then chose Marsh once more for a 44-yard touchdown that gave Indiana its first lead of the game.

Neither scoring throw was especially difficult. Both were straightforward reads and clean throws.

But after a day full of accuracy problems, Hoover’s ability to reset and hit the right plays in the biggest spots mattered. That kind of quick recovery is what quarterbacks need when the game tightens, and Indiana may lean on it again.

Dylan Raiola Just Changed The Feel Of Nebraska's Oregon Showdown

Dylan Raiolas path into Nebraskas matchup with Oregon suddenly looks a lot different than it did just a week ago. Oregons quarterback situation has been thrown into flux after a rough outing against UCLA, and the ripple effect matters for the Cornhuskers because it could change the tone of a game that already had plenty of attention attached to it.

Raiolas performance led to a late benching, while Brock Thomas steadied Oregon in relief and gave the Ducks something to think about if Dante Moore is not fully recovered from a concussion. For Nebraska, that means preparing for a showdown without a clear idea of which Oregon quarterback it will see, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already compelling matchup. [Read more 🡒]

Nebraska Let A Huge Opportunity Slip Away Against Indiana

Nebraska spent much of the afternoon doing enough things to put itself in position to win against Indiana, controlling the ball longer and piling up more yards in a game that felt very much there for the taking. Still, the Cornhuskers came away empty, undone by a missed field goal, a handful of defensive coverage lapses and a few coaching choices that left plenty of room for second-guessing once the final whistle sounded.

Injuries and missing players only added to the challenge, and Nebraska never quite found the clean finish it needed when the game tightened late. For a team that seemed to have the edge in enough areas to separate itself, the result was a frustrating reminder that moving the ball and winning possession battles does not mean much if the critical moments go the other way. Nebraska Football Suddenly Has One More Thing To Watch At Oregon

Nebraska fans got a full weekend of reminders that sports mood can swing fast. The volleyball team kept its undefeated season rolling by sweeping No. 7 Wisconsin, while the basketball team used an exhibition loss to Saint Louis as an early measuring stick for Fred Hoibergs group. On the football side, though, the attention stays fixed on the Cornhuskers loss to Indiana and the questions it raised going into a trip to Oregon.

The quarterback situation is the part Nebraska will be watching closest. Dylan Raiola was benched in Oregons recent loss, and that adds a fresh layer to an already tricky matchup as the Cornhuskers try to bounce back. For a team that has already seen one setback, the next move under center could shape how it approaches the Ducks long before kickoff. [Read more 🡒]
