Iowa AD Faces Pressure As McCollum Stock Skyrockets

Iowa AD Beth Goetz hints at a promising future for Hawkeyes basketball under Coach Ben McCollum, as the program eyes strategic changes following a historic season.

After an impressive run to the Elite Eight, Iowa's head men's basketball coach, Ben McCollum, is poised for a well-deserved pay raise.

McCollum's current six-year contract with the Hawkeyes started at $3.35 million in its first year, and thanks to Iowa's March Madness success, he’s set to pocket an additional $150,000 bonus. This bonus is part of his contract's NCAA Tournament incentives, which reward a deep tournament run.

As Iowa prepares to revamp its roster-replacing standout point guard Bennett Stirtz among others-there's a buzz around McCollum as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Iowa's athletic director, Beth Goetz, seems to have struck gold with McCollum, whose leadership has invigorated the program.

Goetz expressed her enthusiasm to CBS college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, praising McCollum's impact and looking forward to a bright future under his guidance. "I couldn’t be more thrilled with what our program has accomplished and the leadership of Coach McCollum. We are excited about Ben’s future here at Iowa and will work in partnership with him toward continued success," she stated.

In McCollum's debut season, Iowa finished 24-13 (10-10 in the Big Ten), marking their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1999 and first Elite Eight since 1987. The Hawkeyes are now attracting high-profile recruits, bringing a new energy to a program that had been lacking in recent years.

It’s likely McCollum will see a restructured contract that reflects his rising stock. Iowa is keen to maintain this momentum, and securing McCollum long-term is a crucial step. Despite swirling rumors of interest from other programs, McCollum remains focused on Iowa, but the administration knows they need to act swiftly to retain him.

Currently, McCollum's contract outlines the following salary structure for the upcoming years:

  • May 1, 2026-April 30, 2027: $3.6 million
  • May 1, 2027-April 30, 2028: $3.8 million
  • May 1, 2028-April 30, 2029: $3.9 million
  • May 1, 2029-April 30, 2030: $4 million
  • May 1, 2030-April 30, 2031: $4.1 million

With McCollum's value on the rise, Iowa is in a prime position to ensure their coaching star remains at the helm, steering the Hawkeyes toward continued success.
