Illinois Faces A Brutal Test To Keep Its Big Ten Surge Alive

Watch as two evenly matched teams clash in a crucial Big Ten showdown, with Illinois riding a hot streak and Nebraska seeking redemption for late-game collapses.

Illinois and Nebraska meet Friday night in Champaign with both teams sitting at 5-3, and both carrying the kind of season that has been hard to pin down. The Illini looked like they had slipped, then suddenly ripped off three straight Big Ten wins. Nebraska, meanwhile, has been close to looking like a national contender again, only to let three fourth-quarter leads slip away in its last three games.

That makes this one feel like a test of who can finally close. Nebraska has been good enough to get itself into position. Illinois has been the team finishing the job.

The Illini’s recent run has been built on survival and late-game nerve. They won in overtime at Michigan State with freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II helping seal it.

They came back from 10 down against Oregon and hung 21 unanswered points on the Ducks in Champaign. Then they pulled out a walk-off field goal at Maryland to escape College Park.

So if Friday turns into a one-score game in the fourth quarter, Illinois probably likes its chances. Of course, Nebraska could also make that scenario irrelevant by building a lead earlier. That possibility is very much on the table too.

The numbers point to a real trench battle. Illinois has converted 44.7 percent of its third downs, but Nebraska’s defense has been absurd on that front, allowing opponents to convert only 21.4 percent of the time.

That ranks first in the country, and not by a little. The next closest team is UCLA at 26.4 percent.

The run game may decide everything. Illinois is averaging 164.2 rushing yards per game at 5.2 yards per carry, and over the last two weeks the Illini have piled up more than 400 rushing yards, including a pair of 60-plus-yard touchdowns. Nebraska’s defense has been even tougher on the ground, holding opponents to 91.1 rushing yards per game at 3.1 yards per carry and just three rushing touchdowns all season.

Who wins that fight at the line of scrimmage will determine whether Illinois can stay on schedule, keep the third downs manageable and actually convert them. In other words, that battle may decide the game.

If the Illini can’t string together long drives, Ethan Moczulski could end up being the difference. The Illinois kicker is 12-for-15 on field goals this season, an 80 percent clip, and he has not missed an extra point, going 26-for-26. He just delivered the game-winner at Maryland, and Bret Bielema is not shy about calling on him once the offense gets across midfield.

Illinois may be able to hit a few chunk plays and move the ball in bursts, but sustained drives could be hard to come by, and explosive plays may not come easy either. That puts even more pressure on Moczulski, who may be called on often in a game that looks best for Illinois if it stays low-scoring and tight. In that kind of matchup, every kick can swing the night.

Nebraska Volleyball Just Took A Recruiting Hit Fans Wont Ignore

A notable recruiting change hit Nebraska volleyball this week when Kendall Omoruyi, one of the top prospects in the 2027 class, announced she was moving her verbal commitment from Nebraska to Texas A&M. Omoruyi framed the decision around personal growth and spirituality, while also making sure to thank both programs for the role they played in her process.

For Nebraska, it is the kind of development that lands with extra weight because of how much long-term talent matters in a sport where roster building is constant and elite front-row players are so hard to replace. Texas A&M, fresh off its first national championship, now adds Omoruyi to an already strong group of middle blockers, while the Huskers are left to regroup and keep working the recruiting board. Nebraska Gets A Key Friday Night Boost With One Big Question Left

Nebraska should get a useful Friday night boost up front with Gunnar Gottula expected back on the offensive line against Illinois after recovering from a head injury. The Cornhuskers also have safety Jamir Conn back at practice and listed as probable, giving the defense a chance to regain another piece as the game approaches.

There is still some uncertainty around Conn, who needs final clearance before he can be counted on fully, while several Nebraska players, including Anthony Jones, remain officially out. Even with those absences, the return of Gottula gives Nebraska a little more stability in a matchup where depth and availability could matter just as much as the game plan. [Read more 🡒]

Nebraska Built A Memorial Stadium Look Fans Will Be Arguing About

Nebraska turned Memorial Stadium into a full Halloween stage for its blackout night game, and the field itself became part of the show. The end zones were painted black, a skull and crossbones sat at midfield, and the whole look gave the place a different feel from the usual home-game setup. It was the kind of one-night transformation that takes more than a few cans of paint and a good idea.

The process stretched across about a week and required multiple painting steps, with weather adding its own complications along the way. Planning for it started a year in advance, which says plenty about how much thought went into making the scene pop. Nebraska also intends to keep the tradition going, and there is already talk of pushing the field design even further next time. [Read more 🡒]
