Huskers Stunned by Purdue in Big Ten Tournament Showdown

Nebraska's hopes of advancing in the Big Ten Tournament were dashed as Purdue's strategic play and rebounding edge sent the Huskers packing in a 74-58 loss.

In a Big Ten Tournament showdown at the United Center, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, seeded second, couldn't overcome a strong start by the seventh-seeded Purdue Boilermakers, falling 74-58. This quarterfinal clash saw Nebraska (26-6) trailing from the get-go, as Purdue (25-8) surged to a 13-3 lead within minutes. Despite a spirited effort to cut an 18-point second-half deficit down to eight with just over eight minutes left, Purdue's resilience ensured their path to the semifinals.

Pryce Sandfort was the standout for Nebraska, contributing 15 points, while Rienk Mast added 11, and Braden Frager chipped in with eight. The Huskers shot 39.3% from the field, hitting 22 of their 56 attempts, while Purdue was slightly more efficient, shooting 44.8% on 26-of-58 shooting. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, each going 10-of-31.

Purdue's dominance on the boards was evident with a 37-29 rebounding edge, and their 19-8 advantage in second-chance points underscored their control. Even though turnovers were nearly even, Purdue capitalized better, outscoring Nebraska 17-5 in points off turnovers.

Fletcher Loyer led Purdue with 19 points, with Oscar Cluff adding a near double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds, and C.J. Cox also scoring 12.

As the game tipped off, Purdue's hot hand was clear, nailing five of their first six shots and three of four from downtown. Nebraska tried to respond, with Mast and Sandfort hitting key shots to narrow the gap to 13-8. Despite these efforts, Purdue's quick 7-0 run pushed their lead back to 28-19, and they maintained a double-digit cushion, leading 41-28 at halftime thanks to Loyer's two late threes.

Nebraska showed fight in the second half, with Jamarques Lawrence opening with a jumper. Yet, Purdue's 7-0 spurt stretched their lead to 48-30.

The Huskers battled back, with Frager's layup and threes from Sandfort and Mast narrowing it to 51-41. A three-pointer from Sam Hoiberg brought Nebraska within eight, but Purdue's Cluff answered with a crucial putback dunk to regain control.

Despite Cale Jacobsen's driving layup bringing Nebraska within eight once more, Purdue's decisive 14-2 run sealed the game. Garcia and Lawrence each added six points for Nebraska, while Hoiberg contributed five points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Looking ahead, Nebraska awaits their fate in the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, set for Sunday at 5 p.m. CT on CBS. The Huskers will hope to regroup and make a mark in the tournament.
