Huskers Stun Fans with New Coaching Staff Shake-Up

Nebraska boosts its football staff by promoting Brett Maher and Nick Humphrey to lead special teams, while adding Tyler Yelk as the new safeties coach.

Nebraska Football is making waves with some strategic coaching moves that could shape the team's future. Head Coach Matt Rhule has officially elevated Brett Maher and Nick Humphrey to lead the Huskers' special teams, while adding Tyler Yelk as the new safeties coach.

Brett Maher steps up as the special teams coordinator after playing a pivotal role in Nebraska's 2025 success. The Huskers connected on 16 of 19 field goals and limited opponents to just 23 punt return yards, making them a force in return and coverage categories nationwide. Maher’s influence was clear as kicker Kyle Cunanan nailed 61 of 64 kicks, and freshman punter Archie Wilson set a defensive benchmark not seen in 30 years.

Maher brings a wealth of experience from his NFL days, where he boasted an impressive 80 percent field goal success rate. His knack for long-distance kicks is legendary, holding the record for most career 60-yard field goals.

His time with the Cowboys was particularly noteworthy, setting a single-season kicking record with 137 points and leading the league with 78 touchbacks. Maher’s legacy at Nebraska is cemented with his induction into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 2025.

Nick Humphrey, now co-special teams coordinator, made an immediate impact in his first year with the Huskers. His expertise contributed to Nebraska ranking high in blocked punts, kicks, and return defenses. Humphrey’s journey began at Tennessee, where he excelled as a special teams graduate assistant, helping the Volunteers reach the 2024 College Football Playoff.

On the defensive side, Tyler Yelk joins forces with first-year coordinator Rob Aurich. Yelk arrives after a successful stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, where his defensive insights helped secure an NFC East title and a top-five scoring defense ranking in 2025. His familiarity with Aurich’s system makes him a perfect fit for Nebraska.

Yelk’s resume is impressive, having contributed to the Eagles' historic 2024 season, culminating in a Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. His college coaching career spans multiple programs, where he consistently delivered top-tier defensive performances.

With these strategic coaching moves, Nebraska is poised to enhance both their special teams and defensive units, aiming for a winning season ahead.
