Gunnar Gottula is back in the mix for Nebraska, and this time he’s bringing more than just experience to the table.
The 6-foot-6, 320-pound junior from Lincoln Southeast missed nearly half of the 2025 season with a knee injury, then sat out spring ball while recovering from surgery. Now he’s back on the field in fall camp and trying to turn that rehab stretch into another shot at a starting job.
Gottula has already done that once. After appearing in four games as a redshirt in 2023, he earned a spot in the lineup in 2024 and made nine starts at left tackle while playing in 11 games overall. He was building on that in 2025 before the injury, which was described as a cartilage/meniscus issue, cut his season short after six missed games.
The time away didn’t just slow him down - it gave him a chance to attack the parts of his game he could still control.
“I focus a lot on my strength, just getting stronger, building my body, gaining good weight,” Gottula told reporters Tuesday after practice. “That's kind of been my big focus. And then, you know, just trying to refine all my techniques and fix different things here and there once I've got back to playing in camp.”
That work has shown up in camp, where Gottula says he feels bigger and stronger than he did a year ago.
“I feel good out there,” Gottula said. “Kind of bigger than I was last year. So, it feels good to have a little more weight, a little more strength from the offseason.”
For now, Nebraska has him working mostly at right tackle, where he’s battling South Carolina transfer Tree Babalade for the starting job. Babalade comes with his own résumé, including 15 career starts at South Carolina while playing both tackle spots and five starts at right tackle in 2025.
Gottula, though, isn’t spending his energy looking over his shoulder.
“I think my biggest sense of motivation was just coming back healthy from my injury and getting back to playing football,” Gottula said. “I think the biggest thing with everyone on our team is we kind of have a mindset of you're competing against yourself every single day to be better every single day.”
That attitude has kept him locked in on his own growth, not the matchup in front of him. He’s already got nine starts at left tackle under his belt, and that kind of experience on both sides of the line matters as Nebraska keeps sorting out its best combination up front.
He’s also shown he’ll move around if needed. During camp, he has taken reps at guard as well, giving position coach Geep Wade another option while the staff works through the line.
“I know things will happen in football,” Gottula said. “So, I mean, I'm ready to play whatever position is needed.”
That flexibility could help Nebraska, especially with an offensive line that includes several players with significant Power Four experience. Gottula sees value in that kind of shared background.
“When a whole unit has seen a lot of different things from different conferences or different teams just in general, I think it helps,” Gottula said. “We can pick each other's brains by what we see on film or just when we're out on the field, so we can really mesh together and kind of use that to our advantage.”
Gottula still has to win the job, and Babalade gives Nebraska a legitimate challenge at right tackle. But after a season interrupted by injury and an offseason built around getting stronger, the Huskers’ junior lineman has positioned himself for another run at a starting role.

Nebraska Has An Unexpected Position Problem On Offense
The tight end room has emerged as one of the quieter concerns around Nebraska heading into the 2026 season, and it is not hard to see why the coaching staff has been pressing the issue. Former offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield was not pleased with what he saw in practice, and Dana Holgorsen has already taken aim at the groups summer work, especially when the Huskers have tried to involve the position in the passing game.
For Nebraska, the challenge is less about whether there is talent on the roster and more about whether that talent can turn into dependable production. Luke Lindenmeyer and Carter Nelson are the obvious names to watch as the staff looks for more consistency, while true freshman Luke Sorensen adds another intriguing option to the mix. The upside is there, but this is one of those spots where the Huskers need answers before the offense can feel complete. [Read more 🡒]
Adrian Martinez Just Made His 49ers Roster Fight Even Tougher
Adrian Martinezs bid to stick with the San Francisco 49ers has hit a rough patch in the preseason, and the former Nebraska quarterback is now facing a tougher climb on the roster bubble. Through his first two exhibition games, Martinez has had trouble with accuracy and ball security, completing 24 of 47 passes while throwing two interceptions, a line that has left him behind other quarterbacks on the depth chart.
Martinez still has a path, but it is not the cleanest one. His chances could improve if injuries continue to thin the quarterback room, which would keep the door open a little longer for him to make a case in the weeks ahead. For now, though, he has work to do if he wants to turn a difficult start into a real argument for a roster spot. [Read more 🡒]
Justin Evans Is Giving Nebraska Fans Real Reason To Believe
Nebraskas offensive front has a familiar name drawing national attention heading into 2026. Justin Evans, the fifth-year senior center, has been named a second-team All-American by The Athletic, another sign that his rise has gone well beyond Lincoln. A steady presence in the middle, Evans has started 31 games for the Cornhuskers and has built a reputation as one of the better interior linemen in the country.
The appeal is easy to see for Nebraska fans. Evans started all 13 games in 2025 and was not responsible for any sacks allowed by the offensive line, a strong marker for a player whose job is often measured by what does not go wrong. With his status as a top interior prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft already established, Evans gives Nebraska both a proven anchor now and a clear pro-level storyline to watch as the season approaches.
