NC State’s tight end room looks a lot different heading into 2026, and that’s exactly why Hunter Provience lands on the Wolfpack’s list of most important players.
The senior transfer arrives in Raleigh with the kind of résumé that makes him hard to ignore. He’s a 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end who spent three seasons at Montana State after signing with the Bobcats in the 2023 class.
Before that, he put together a big two-way high school career at El Cajon (Calif.) Christian, where he played three seasons of varsity football.
As a senior, Provience caught 39 passes for 556 yards and nine touchdowns on offense. He also made his presence felt on defense with 26 tackles, including three for loss and three sacks. By the time his high school career ended, he had 78 receptions for 1,128 yards and 13 touchdowns, plus 57 tackles, six for loss and six sacks.
Montana State was the next stop, and Provience earned his way onto the field quickly. He redshirted in 2023, then went on to appear in 32 games over three seasons.
In 2025, he finished with 11 catches for 136 yards and one touchdown. His full Montana State line came out to 19 receptions for 252 yards and two scores.
After the 2025 season, Provience entered the portal and committed to NC State on Jan. 10 before officially joining the program soon after. He was one of two portal tight ends to land with the Wolfpack, alongside Oregon transfer Vander Ploog. Among State’s 2026 transfer class, Provience was the highest-ranked addition, earning a four-star transfer grade of 90.
That matters because NC State’s tight end group from a year ago was a real strength. Justin Joly, Cody Hardy and Dante Daniels all ranked among the Pack’s top six players according to Pro Football Focus.
But that group has been gutted: Joly and Hardy are in the NFL, while Daniels is in the CFL. So there’s plenty of uncertainty in that room now.
Provience is the one who stands out as the most complete option on the roster. He may not be the same level of blocker Hardy was, but he’s expected to carry a heavy load in the run game, especially early in the season. That alone makes him a major piece.
And there’s reason to think he’ll matter in the passing game, too. With the turnover at the position, Provience looks like the tight end most likely to be featured more than Hardy was. Behind him, sophomores Vander Ploog and Preston Douglas are part of the mix as NC State sorts out a new-look room.

NC State Roster Update Just Changed How Wolfpack Fans View Eligibility
The NCAAs latest eligibility overhaul has already started to show up in NC States football roster, and it changes the way fans have to read the depth chart. With the Division I Cabinet approving a model that gives student-athletes up to five years of eligibility if they enroll on time, the old layers of redshirt rules and season-of-competition math suddenly look a lot less important, and the Wolfpacks roster page has been updated to reflect that new reality.
For a program trying to plan beyond the current season, the appeal is obvious: roster management gets simpler, and players can be tracked on a cleaner timeline instead of through a maze of waivers and exceptions. It also means some familiar names now carry longer runway than fans may have expected, with the roster showing extended eligibility across multiple classes as NC State adjusts to a system that is already reshaping how college football teams think about the future. Where NC States Offensive Transfers Landed As Rebuild Pressure Mounts
NC States offense spent the 2026 offseason losing more than just depth pieces, with several transfers taking proven production and future upside out of the program. Running back Hollywood Smothers, left tackle Jacarrius Peak, wide receivers Noah Rogers and Terrell Anderson, and quarterback Lex Thomas all moved on after making notable contributions in Raleigh, leaving the Wolfpack with a very different look as the roster turns over.
The departures sharpen the pressure on a unit that now has to be rebuilt with returning players and new additions in key spots. Duke Scott and Davion Gause are part of the answer at running back, Jimariou McCrimon is among the names expected to help, and the receiver room has to be remade quickly enough to keep the offense from feeling the full weight of those exits. NC State May Need This Hidden Edge More Than Ever This Fall
NC State is opening fall camp with a mix of familiar faces and portal additions, and the special teams picture could matter more than usual as the Wolfpack try to steady a roster that has to replace eight defensive starters. The defense will get most of the attention, as it should, but hidden value often shows up in the less glamorous spots, where field position can quietly shape a season.
Junior punter Jackson Waller is one of those pieces. The Arkansas State transfer gives NC State another experienced leg as it sorts through the fall and looks for ways to compete more effectively, and his role could become especially important if the defense needs help flipping the field. For a team trying to build around returning talent while integrating new arrivals, even the smallest edges can carry real weight. [Read more 🡒]
