NC State and Virginia were supposed to help college football make a splash overseas. Instead, their 2026 opener is headed back home.
The Wolfpack and Cavaliers will kick off their 2026 seasons against each other at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia, at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. It’s a matchup that still carries plenty of intrigue, with NC State led by quarterback CJ Bailey and looking to climb toward the top of the ACC, while Virginia tries to get back to the conference title game after its 10-win 2025 season.
Originally, that game was slated for Rio de Janeiro, which would have made it college football’s first game in Brazil. Both schools agreed on June 3 to move it to Charlottesville.
That relocation fits into a broader pattern. Michigan had also been scheduled to open the 2026 season in Frankfurt, Germany, against Western Michigan, a game that would have been college football’s first in Germany.
But that trip was scrapped, too. Western Michigan and Michigan are only about two hours apart by car, and Michigan athletics director Warde Manuel later said the move did not make financial sense.
The push for international football has plenty of backing at the NFL level. Commissioner Roger Goodell has spent years pushing the league’s global reach, with games played in multiple foreign countries each season and talk of future franchises overseas.
College football is a different animal, though. The sport’s soul is tied to campus settings, and neutral-site games already draw plenty of criticism. Take those games out of the country, and the disconnect only gets louder.
Money is the biggest roadblock. Home games are a major source of revenue for schools, and overseas matchups limit the number of fans who can realistically travel and help fill the stands.
The logistics don’t get any easier for the teams, either. Football teams don’t make the kind of frequent international trips that other sports do, but the cost still matters.
Basketball has already shown what that pressure can do. In the last two years, major programs have backed away from events like the Maui Invitational and Battle 4 Atlantis and leaned into The Players Era Festival in Las Vegas instead, where travel is cheaper and NIL incentives are part of the package.
There’s also the question of what happens after the trip itself. Recent Ireland games have left some teams in rough shape. Nebraska and Northwestern combined to go 5-19 in 2022, Florida State followed its ACC Championship run in 2023 with a 2-10 season in 2024, and Kansas State and Iowa State both made coaching changes in the 2026 offseason.
