The University of North Carolina football program is facing a new layer of scrutiny, with reporting from Pablo Torre saying the school is under investigation by the College Sports Commission, the group that handles compliance and enforcement of NCAA and NIL rules.
That news surfaced on the same day UNC put football general manager Mike Lombardi on paid administrative leave, effective immediately. The university announced the move Monday morning in a brief statement from vice chancellor for communications Dean Stoyer. In that statement, the school said that as is standard with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes cannot discuss the topic further, and that the action “has no reflection on the merits.”
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the leave stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC football front-office employee. Thamel reported that a pending investigation prompted the decision, and that it was made by university administration rather than head coach Bill Belichick.
Torre described the College Sports Commission probe as separate from the Lombardi HR issue. No details of the CSC investigation have been made public.
The commission oversees revenue-sharing caps, third-party NIL deals, and sport-specific roster limits. One report suggested Lombardi’s actions may be of interest in the CSC matter, though that connection has not been confirmed.
Lombardi, a longtime NFL executive and close Belichick associate, arrived in Chapel Hill in December 2024 as one of Belichick’s first hires. He previously worked with Belichick with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. At roughly $1.5 million per year, he is among the highest-paid general managers in college football, and he helped UNC land a top-25 recruiting class in the 2026 cycle.
The timing adds another jolt to a program heading into Belichick’s second season. UNC went 4-8 in 2025 and opens the 2026 season on Aug. 29 against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. Lombardi’s contract runs through January 2028, and university policy for employees in his classification usually limits administrative leave to 30 days while an investigation is ongoing.
UNC has not offered any further comment on either the personnel matter or the CSC investigation.
