Philip Rivers Would Change Everything About NC State's Coaching Search

Could Philip Rivers bring his legendary prowess from the field to the sidelines as NC States next head coach, transforming the program with his celebrated legacy and fresh coaching outlook?

Philip Rivers is the kind of name that instantly changes the mood around NC State football.

The former Wolfpack quarterback remains one of the most beloved figures in Raleigh, and the idea of him stepping into the head coaching job would land with plenty of fans. Rivers is already a G.O.A.T. in Raleigh, and his college résumé still carries serious weight.

From 2000 through 2003, Rivers tore through the ACC and the NCAA in just about every major passing category. In 2003 alone, he threw for 4,491 yards and finished with an NCAA-leading 72.0% completion percentage. He also helped lead NC State to an 11-3 record that season and took home ACC Offensive Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year honors.

That was only part of a run that made him one of the most decorated players in school history. Rivers holds a long list of NC State and ACC records, and he set an NCAA mark with 51 consecutive starts at quarterback.

During his four seasons, the Wolfpack went 34-17 with Rivers under center and finished 3-1 in bowl games under Chuck Amato. State never had a losing season with him at quarterback, and the Wolfpack never lost more than five games in a season.

His place in program lore is already secure. NC State retired his No. 17 jersey in 2003, and his name went up in Carter-Finley Stadium’s ring of honor in 2013. His NFL career only added to the legend, including eight Pro Bowl selections.

A Rivers hire would also bring an immediate jolt in Raleigh beyond nostalgia. It would give the program a familiar face with deep credibility among alumni, fans and recruits. The pitch would be simple: recruits may not know his college game, but their parents do, and Rivers can sell them on what it takes to reach the next level.

He’s currently the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, so coaching is not new to him.

And there’s another wrinkle that would make this even more fascinating: his son, Gunner, is a 4-star quarterback in the Class of 2027 and is already committed to NC State. A father-and-son pairing in Raleigh would be wild.

Still, the football question is the one that matters most. Former NC State coach Dave Doeren was already proven in college football when he arrived, having gone 23-4 in two seasons at NIU with a 15-1 conference record. Rivers does not bring that same resume as a college head coach, at least not yet.

That’s why the conversation around him is so tricky. The name would thrill the fan base, and few would argue against the emotional pull of bringing him home.

But after 14 long seasons with Doeren, many around the program want something more than a sentimental splash. They want the next chapter to mean real progress.

NC State Just Got The Recruiting Jolt Fans Feared After Doeren

Dave Doerens firing has already started to ripple through NC States 2027 recruiting class, and the first real sign of turbulence came quickly. Three-star offensive tackle Conner Rutherford backed out of his pledge, a notable hit because he was the fourth-highest-ranked commitment in a class that still sits at 18 verbal pledges, ranked 43rd nationally and 10th in the ACC.

For the Wolfpack, the bigger issue is what happens next. Coaching changes almost always put a class on shaky ground, and this one is no exception, with more decommitments possible as recruits reassess the situation. The speculation around who takes over, including chatter about Philip Rivers, only adds another layer of uncertainty for a class that suddenly looks far less settled than it did just days ago. NC States Coaching Search Just Took A Very Different Turn

NC States coaching search has already moved into unusual territory after the school parted ways with Dave Doeren and is facing an estimated $10 million buyout. With the opening now on the board, the conversation around the job has shifted well beyond the usual list of sitting assistants and coordinators, and Baylors parallel search has only added to the sense that both programs are weighing a different kind of hire as they try to reset.

One idea circulating around the Wolfpacks opening is Philip Rivers, the former NC State star whose name carries obvious weight in Raleigh even without any college head-coaching background. The logic behind a move like that is less about traditional coaching pedigree and more about the modern realities of roster building and fan engagement, where a familiar face can potentially help a school generate the kind of support that matters as much as anything on the field. CBS Just Gave NC State Fans A Fresh Respect Debate

Matt Norlanders annual Top 101 from CBS Sports has already handed NC State fans a fresh talking point, because the Wolfpack landed at No. 72, a spot that sits well below where several other projection systems see them. With a new coach making the roster harder to read, Norlander acknowledged the uncertainty around this group and pointed to some of the key players in the mix, but his placement still stands out next to the broader industry view.

The gap is what makes this worth watching, especially since CBSs own preseason bracketology has NC State safely in the NCAA tournament field as a 12-seed. When one outlet is projecting the Pack as a March team and another is slotting them much lower than most analytics models, it turns the early season into a built-in respect test, and it also sharpens the contrast with North Carolinas standing in the same conversation.
