NC State’s secondary took an early-season hit with defensive back Asaad Brown no longer listed on the football roster.
The reason for Brown’s departure is not known. He had already missed the Wolfpack’s last two games because of injury after seeing action in the season opener against Virginia.
Against the Cavaliers, Brown played 22 defensive snaps, made three tackles and posted a strong 71.9 overall PFF grade.
Three weeks into the season, he’s off the roster.
That’s a tough loss for NC State’s defensive backfield, no matter how the situation is eventually explained. Brown had been one of the program’s most productive young defensive backs in 2025.
As a redshirt freshman, he finished with 64 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups, and his tackle total ranked third on the team. He also put up a 68.0 overall PFF grade.
His path into that role wasn’t immediate. Brown came off the bench in NC State’s first three games last season before earning a starting job against Duke. Once he got in the lineup, he held onto it.
There was some uncertainty about where Brown would fit in entering this year. NC State listed him as a nickel, while the season-opening depth chart had him third at free safety behind Ronnie Royal III and Brody Barnhardt. He had also already shown he could handle safety duties after arriving at NC State as a cornerback prospect.
That kind of versatility is part of what made Brown valuable. He had experience in multiple spots and had already proven he could start at the ACC level.
Brown also came into college with a strong recruiting profile. Rivals rated him a four-star prospect, and ESPN had him as the No. 9 overall player in Virginia in the 2024 recruiting class. NC State originally recruited him primarily as a cornerback before shifting him to safety.
For the Wolfpack, the timing matters. NC State has already leaned on Ronnie Royal III, King Mack and Brody Barnhardt at safety, while Jackson Vick has handled most of the work at nickel. Brown gave defensive coordinator DJ Eliot another experienced option who could move around the secondary.
Even with Brown sidelined since the opener, there had still been a path for him to work back into the rotation once healthy. His absence now leaves one more question mark in a secondary that had already been sorting through its pieces.
The timing is also notable considering NC State just received good news regarding the eligibility of veteran Cornerback Jamel Johnson.
