NC States QB Commit Is Suddenly Worth Watching Again

Gunner Rivers is on the mend and eyeing a comeback as NC State stays optimistic about their future prospects despite current hurdles.

NC State’s future at quarterback has taken a hit this fall, but the latest update on Gunner Rivers points toward a return sooner rather than later.

Rivers, the Fairhope (Ala.) St.

Michael standout and NC State commit, has been sidelined since Week 1 after suffering a lower body injury in the first quarter of the Cardinals’ season opener. That absence has stretched on for several weeks, but Philip Rivers said the recovery is moving in the right direction.

During an appearance on the “Move the Sticks” podcast with Daniel Jeremiah of ESPN, Philip Rivers, who serves as St. Michael’s head coach and is Gunner’s father, described the quarterback’s progress.

"He's doing a lot better," Philip Rivers said. "Those first two weeks were rough.

As a young player, he hasn't been through an injury of any sorts. He's always been out there and been available to us, so for him it was hard.

And then you're on crutches for 14 days, so he couldn't walk and you don't even feel like a regular person. Moving around the house, I got tired of him asking me for something to drink and to bring his meal in the evening.

"But he's back and around. He ran a little bit yesterday, so we're going to get him back for the home stretch and I think that will be a shot in the arm for everybody."

Rivers entered the season as one of the most highly regarded players in the country, ranked in the Top 50 by 247Sports and listed as the No. 4 quarterback nationally. His résumé is already loaded: 10,510 passing yards, 114 touchdown passes and just 15 interceptions, along with 292 rushing yards and six rushing scores since becoming a starter as a freshman.

St. Michael has felt his absence.

The Cardinals are 2-3 since Rivers went down on Sept. 22, though they’ve now won two straight after beating previously undefeated Bayside Academy last week. With five games left before the postseason, there’s still time for Rivers to rejoin the lineup.

Before that win over Bayside, Rivers told reporter Randy Kennedy, "Hopefully, I'll be back in a couple of weeks."

There still isn’t a firm timetable, but the signs are pointing toward a return in the near future for one of the country’s top prep quarterbacks.

Dave Doeren Sends NC State Fans A Clear Louisville Challenge

Dave Doeren spent part of his media session this week talking about the kind of details that tend to matter in November, from tweaks to NC States practice schedule to the importance of staying locked in from one snap to the next. He also pointed to the Wolfpacks steady improvement over the season, a reminder that this group has been trying to stack small gains while preparing for another big home opportunity at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The bigger message, though, was aimed squarely at Saturdays atmosphere. Doeren made clear that Louisville is walking into what he sees as the Cardinals first true road test of the season, and he wants NC State fans to make the environment count with noise and energy from the opening whistle. For a team trying to protect home field and keep building momentum, the crowd could be every bit as important as the matchup itself. [Read more 🡒]

CJ Baileys Early Slide Is Fueling A Real NC State Debate

CJ Baileys first month of the 2026 season has brought the kind of early turbulence that can reshape a quarterbacks national standing fast. ESPNs Bill Connelly reflected that in his updated Power Four quarterback rankings, sliding Bailey from No. 16 nationally and No. 2 in the ACC in March to No. 41 overall and No. 10 in the league after four games. The numbers still show a productive arm, with 74 completions on 110 throws for 893 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions, but the weekly results have told a less settled story.

Bailey has had the sort of stretch that invites debate because each outing seems to point in a different direction. He opened poorly at Virginia, followed with a strong performance against Richmond, then had a costly late fumble at Vanderbilt before turning in solid but uneven play against Appalachian State. For NC State, the question is no longer whether Bailey has shown promise. It is whether the next stretch of the season will start to look more like his best moments, or keep the conversation focused on the inconsistency that has pulled his stock down. [Read more 🡒]

NC State Heads Into Louisville With One Big Line Concern

NC State heads to Louisville still dealing with the same issue it carried into the last two weeks along the offensive front, with starting center Spike Sowells Jr. set to miss a third straight game. Teague Andersen has held up in his place and even picked up ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors, giving the Wolfpack some stability at a spot that usually doesnt get much spotlight unless things are going wrong.

The matchup also comes with some uncertainty on the other sideline, where Louisville quarterback Lincoln Kienholz is listed as questionable and both teams have a handful of players tagged out, doubtful or questionable. For NC State, though, the bigger question remains how well the line can keep functioning without its usual starter, especially with a road trip that could hinge on how cleanly the offense handles the middle of the line.
