NC State’s home opener against Richmond was interrupted by lightning Friday night, with the Wolfpack up 28-0 and 11:33 left in the second quarter when play was halted at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The delay began after lightning was detected within eight miles of the stadium, forcing players off the field and sending fans out as well. There was no immediate word on when the teams would be able to return when the stoppage was first announced.
Before the weather turned the game sideways, NC State wasted no time taking control. The Wolfpack opened with a four-play, 77-yard drive capped by Davion Gause’s 19-yard touchdown run on his first carry in an NC State uniform. On the very next play from scrimmage, Duke Scott ripped off a 65-yard run for his first touchdown of the season.
Scott kept rolling on NC State’s next scoring march, finishing a seven-yard run to push the lead to 21-0 before the first quarter ended. Then CJ Bailey added another score on a bootleg, slipping in for a one-yard rushing touchdown to make it 28-0 just before the first lightning strike hit the area.
An update later reported another lightning bolt at 8:46 p.m. just outside Carter-Finley Stadium, with heavy rain still falling. At that point, there was still no firm timetable for a return, though another 30-minute delay was considered the minimum.
NC State Radio later reported that the Wolfpack and Richmond would resume at 9:25 p.m. if no more lightning was detected in the area. Fans would be allowed back in at 9:15 p.m., and there would be no halftime break for the game.
