NC State got in on Jamil Robinson before the recruiting world caught up.
Back on June 22, when the Wolfpack offered the 2027 power forward from Georgia, Robinson was still sitting there as an unrated, unranked prospect in the major national databases. No stars.
No buzz. No flood of high-major interest yet.
NC State was the first high-major program to extend an offer.
At the time, Robinson’s list was much quieter. His offers included Charlotte, Georgia Southern, Omaha, Tennessee Tech, West Georgia and Wofford.
Now the picture looks very different.
Just before Robinson committed to NC State on Monday, the recruiting services finally started moving him up the board. Both 247Sports and Rivals now list him as a 3-star prospect.
247Sports has him at No. 219 overall in the 2027 class, No. 37 among power forwards and No. 12 in Georgia. Rivals slots him as the No. 47 power forward nationally and the No. 16 player in Georgia.
The delay makes sense when you look at Robinson’s path.
He wasn’t always a 6-foot-11 frontcourt player. As a freshman, he was 6-foot-6, and since then he’s added five inches. That kind of growth changes everything for a player, especially one who built his game when he was closer to guard size than to being a college big.
And there was another reason he stayed under the radar: he missed almost all of last season after breaking his foot. So while recruiting services were missing time to evaluate him, Robinson was also in the middle of a major physical transformation.
He plays for Eagles Landing Christian Academy in Georgia, and by the time he got back on the floor, he had become a very different-looking prospect. That helps explain why the late rise happened. NC State just got there first.
Justin Gainey’s staff saw Robinson on the AAU circuit and didn’t need a ranking to tell them what they were looking at. They identified a player with real upside, one who had been overlooked for a while but had the kind of tools worth betting on. The appeal was obvious: a 6-foot-11 player with skills, athleticism and a background developed away from the rim.
There’s still a lot of work ahead. Robinson won’t arrive in Raleigh until 2027, and at 205 pounds, he has plenty of room to add strength as his frame continues to change.
That’s part of the draw, though. The version NC State eventually gets could look a lot different from the player the staff first found this summer.
Wolfpack fans won’t have to wait until then to see him, either. Robinson is set to take his official visit to Raleigh on September 11th. It’s a big weekend to be on campus, with NC State football opening at home against Richmond on Friday night at Carter-Finley Stadium and wearing the newly unveiled “Wolfpack Warriors” uniforms.
By then, Robinson will be there as a committed member of NC State’s 2027 class - and as a prospect with stars next to his name, something he didn’t have when the Wolfpack first made the call in June.
Recruiting rankings are useful, but they’re still evaluations of players rather than the thing that determines whether someone can play.
