NC State’s latest depth chart for Saturday’s road game at Vanderbilt brings a few real changes, especially on defense and special teams, while the offense stays exactly where it was last week against Richmond.
The clearest move is at WILL linebacker, where Bailey Benson is now the outright starter. That’s a step up from last week, when Benson was listed OR with Penn State transfer Da’Kaari Nelson. Benson handled the role after AJ Richardson went down with a season-ending torn biceps injury in the opener against Virginia, and his performance against Richmond - an 80.4 PFF grade, third-best on the NC State defense - helped lock it in.
Two true freshmen also forced their way onto the linebacker chart. Jordan Moreta is now third-string at MIKE behind Popo Aguirre and LaCorian Hodge, while Ziggy Moore is third-string at WILL behind Benson and Nelson.
Both earned their spots after strong showings in their first meaningful action against Richmond. Moore posted a 74.3 PFF grade, and Moreta finished at 69.8.
The defense also saw movement at cornerback. Jaren Sensabaugh is now listed as the starter at left cornerback, with Caden Gordon behind him.
Sensabaugh started against Richmond even though he wasn’t on last week’s depth chart, and he had already been listed as the starter in Week 0. Georgia transfer Ondre Evans, who had been listed first before, is no longer on the chart.
Up front, nose guard remains a three-man puzzle. Josiah Victor is listed first, but the depth chart still shows an OR across the position with KaTron Evans and Omarian Abraham.
Abraham is listed third, but he started against Richmond. Victor has the top overall PFF grade in the group at 64.8.
There’s still no clean answer at strong safety, either. King Mack and Tristan Teasdell remain listed OR, with Mack first on the chart even though Teasdell started against Richmond.
Special teams has its own set of wrinkles. Kickoff specialist Nick Konieczynski is back on top of the chart, but there’s now an OR with Drew Lovelace.
Konieczynski was injured against Virginia, which pushed NC State to use former Wolfpack soccer player Lovelace, who had never played organized football, for 11 kickoffs against Richmond. It’s still unclear whether Konieczynski will be available Saturday.
And then there’s the return game, where Jonathan Paylor has entered the picture at kickoff returner. Victor Snow remains the punt returner, but he’s no longer listed at KOR. King Mack is back at the top there, and Paylor is listed behind him after flashing against Richmond with two carries for 52 yards, including a 51-yard run down the sideline.
On offense, nothing changed at all. Spike Sowells Jr. remains the starter at center after leaving Friday night’s 73-0 win early with an injury, and Dave Doeren said Monday he fully expects Sowells to be ready for Vanderbilt.

Defensively, Joseph Adedire and Chase Bond are at end; Victor, Evans and Abraham at nose; Isaiah Shirley and AJ Prim at tackle; Harvey Dyson III, Ke’Von Carter and Sterling Dixon OR at jack; Popo Aguirre, Hodge and Moreta at MIKE; Benson, Nelson and Moore at WILL; Jackson Vick, Ty White and Chino Aguirre at nickel; Sensabaugh and Gordon at left corner; Mack OR Teasdell at strong safety; Ronnie Royal III, Brody Barnhardt and Asaad Brown Jr. at free safety; and Brian Nelson II and Michael Tate at right corner.
The special teams chart lists Kanoah Vinesett at kicker, Jackson Waller at punter and holder, Aiden Arias at long snapper, Snow at punt returner, and Mack and Paylor at kickoff returner.

Ven-Allen Lubins return gives NC State an experienced frontcourt piece at a time when the Wolfpack need stability inside. The fifth-year senior has already been through multiple transfers, but he came back to Raleigh for his senior season with the kind of power-conference seasoning that can matter in a hurry once games start counting. For a roster looking to sort out its interior rotation, that makes his presence especially important.
The only question hanging over it is whether he will actually be available when the season opens. Lubins status depends on a temporary restraining order tied to NCAA eligibility rules, leaving one of NC States most important preseason decisions unresolved for now. Jonathan Paylor Just Gave NC State A Reason To Wonder
Jonathan Paylors 51-yard run against Richmond was the kind of burst that reminds everyone why NC State was so eager to get him on campus in the first place. The four-star back has had a long road back after the torn ACL that wiped out his 2025 season, and this was one of the clearest signs yet that he is moving closer to the player the Wolfpack expected when they recruited him.
Paylor has spent the past two years fighting to get back to full speed after limited action, and he is still working his way up the depth chart as a backup in the backfield. Dave Doeren pointed to the run as a confidence boost, which makes sense for a player trying to rebuild both his form and his rhythm. It also brings a personal layer for junior cornerback Jaren Sensabaugh, who has been working his way back after a season-ending injury last year and now gets a chance to play in his hometown in front of family.
