NC State Suddenly Has A Protection Problem It Can't Ignore

A season-ending injury to center Spike Sowells forces NC State to rethink their offensive line strategy amidst a challenging ACC schedule.

NC State will be without center Spike Sowells for the rest of the 2026 season.

Dave Doeren confirmed Thursday, ahead of the Wake Forest game, that the 2025 Freshman All-American will not return after an injury has kept him sidelined for the last three games. Sowells was already listed as OUT for Saturday against the Demon Deacons.

"Spike's out for the year," Doeren said. "We tried really hard to rehab him back, and it just didn't make enough progress to feel like it was going to get anywhere. And so, unfortunately, he'll get his repair done and get back with his health."

The loss stings for the Wolfpack because Sowells entered the season with plenty of buzz as one of the ACC’s top offensive line prospects. After spending last year at guard to get on the field as a freshman, he moved back to center this offseason, his natural spot, and got off to a strong start.

In the first two games, Sowells posted the best pass-blocking grade on the team at 84.6, per Pro Football Focus. He didn’t allow a pressure against Virginia or Richmond before leaving the Richmond game with a shoulder injury.

At first, Doeren called Sowells "day-to-day" after that injury, but the issue got worse and eventually kept him out for three straight games. Now NC State has to keep piecing together the offensive line without him.

Teague Andersen handled center for the first two games after Sowells went down and even earned ACC OL of the Week honors for his work against App State. But when Jimarion McCrimon was ruled out against Louisville, Andersen moved back to right tackle and Daniel Cruz took over at center.

The Wolfpack could be in for more movement up front on Saturday. Left guard Yousef Mugharbil, who exited the Week 5 game against Louisville early, has already been ruled out for Wake Forest. McCrimon and right guard Kamen Smith are both listed as questionable, which could leave NC State scrambling if four of its five original starters from the opener are unavailable.

NC States New Big Man Could Fit This Fast Style Perfectly

Robert Jurkovics path to Raleigh has already come with the usual adjustments that follow a move from Europe to the U.S., but the NC State newcomer sounds eager for the change in style as much as the change in scenery. He said the faster pace of play here is different from what he knew overseas, and thats exactly the kind of shift that can make a frontcourt addition stand out in the Wolfpacks system.

Jurkovic also described himself as a big man with a high basketball IQ and a jumper that can stretch the floor, traits that fit neatly with a team looking for versatility inside. Just as important, he pointed to the energy and involvement of coach Justin Gainey and his staff as a major reason for coming to NC State, a reminder that the Wolfpacks appeal is about more than fit on the court. NC State Faces A Serious Problem Ahead Of Wake Forest

NC State heads into its matchup with Wake Forest already dealing with a roster squeeze that could force multiple lineup changes on both sides of the ball. The Wolfpack have officially ruled out four starters, including running back Duke Scott, left guard Yousef Mugharbil, center Spike Sowells Jr. and safety Tristan Teasdell, leaving obvious holes to fill as the week unfolds.

The ripple effect does not stop there, either. Four more players, including three starters, are listed as questionable, which puts even more pressure on the offensive line and secondary to hold together if the Wolfpack are going to sort through this injury situation in time for kickoff. CJ Bailey Just Entered A Bigger ACC Conversation

Week 5 in the ACC turned into a reshuffling week at quarterback, with injuries and a notable benching changing the conversation around several teams. But amid all the upheaval, CJ Bailey forced his way into the discussion with a performance that stood out in a conference packed with moving parts, giving NC State a reason to feel better about where its offense is headed as the schedule tightens.

Baileys showing against Louisville added weight to an ACC race that suddenly feels more open at the position, especially with other starters dealing with setbacks or changes on the depth chart. He now carries that momentum into NC States next stretch, and with Wake Forest coming to Raleigh, the Wolfpack have a chance to see whether his recent play is the start of something more lasting.
