NC State Still Has One Big Lineup Concern Before Duke

While NC State welcomes back key defensive starters for their clash with Duke, injuries still leave gaps in the lineup that could impact the game.

NC State got a real mixed bag on Thursday night when the second ACC Availability Report for Saturday’s home game against Duke dropped.

The Wolfpack saw a handful of encouraging names fall off the report entirely, including three defensive starters. But the update also brought a hit to the offense, with two players moving from Questionable to Out. And two more important pieces are still sitting in limbo with kickoff approaching against the 6-2 Blue Devils.

The clearest positive for NC State is on defense. Of the five Wolfpack players listed as Probable on Wednesday, only quarterback Will Wilson remained on that list Thursday.

The others - Royal, Adedire and Dyson among them - are no longer on the report at all. That matters, because all three are starters on NC State’s defense, and the Wolfpack will need every healthy body it can get against Duke.

The setback comes on the other side of the ball. Tristan Teasdell and Preston Douglas were both downgraded from Questionable to Out.

Teasdell has already been out since getting hurt against Louisville, so his absence doesn’t change much. King Mack will keep starting in his place.

Douglas is a tougher loss. He left NC State’s win over Cal last Saturday and never made it back in. He’s been one of the Wolfpack’s most productive receivers this season, ranking second on the team with 26 catches and 304 receiving yards.

The two biggest names still unresolved are running back Duke Scott and offensive lineman Teague Andersen, both of whom remain Questionable.

Scott hasn’t played since leaving the Louisville game with an injury. He wears NC State’s No. 1 jersey and serves as one of the team’s captains, so his status carries real weight.

If he can go against Duke, it would give the Wolfpack a major lift. Davion Gause is coming off his best game in a Wolfpack uniform against Cal, and the idea of pairing him with a healthy Scott is an appealing one for NC State’s offense.

Andersen may be the more important question mark. He has been NC State’s best offensive lineman this season and, according to Pro Football Focus, owns the highest grade on the roster among Wolfpack linemen.

That’s even more notable considering how much he’s been asked to handle. He’s already played right tackle, left guard and center this season.

He opened the year at right tackle, then shifted around as injuries and personnel changes forced the issue, eventually moving to center even though it isn’t his most natural spot.

Andersen also hobbled off against Cal, which made his appearance on the report expected. When he left, Rylan Vann stepped in and played 40 snaps, the most of his college career. Kage Payne is listed as Andersen’s backup at center on this week’s depth chart, but based on what happened against Cal, Vann would seem to be the likelier option if Andersen can’t play Saturday.

NC States First Home Test Will Show How Ready This Team Is

NC States first home test arrives with plenty of moving parts still settling into place, as several players continue adjusting to new roles and schemes early in the season. The Wolfpack get ETSU next, and while it is still early, this is the kind of game that can start to show how quickly a new-look roster is coming together in front of its own crowd.

ETSU comes in under Brooks Savage after a loss to Arizona State, and the matchup carries extra weight because the Bucs are dealing with a major personnel loss as they try to steady themselves. The challenge is obvious even before tipoff: NC State will be asking questions of a team that has already had to reshape its rotation, and the response should reveal a lot about where the Wolfpack stand right now. NC State Faces A Big Rivalry Test In The Middle Of Change

Duke and NC State are heading into an ACC matchup with very different kinds of momentum, but both sides know the setting can flatten the usual script. The Blue Devils are 6-2 and coming off a stretch that has kept them in the conference race, while the Wolfpack are trying to steady themselves at 4-4 in the middle of a season defined by change. Manny Diaz and interim coach Todd Goebbel both addressed the challenge this week, underscoring how rivalry games tend to ignore records and force teams to prove who they are in the moment.

For NC State, the intrigue goes beyond the standings and into the backfield, where the possibility of a key return could give the offense a needed lift. Duke, meanwhile, brings a dangerous ground game and a back who has been central to its scoring surge, which is part of why this matchup feels like more than just another ACC date. The Wolfpack have spent the week sorting out roles and rhythm, and this game offers a clear chance to show whether the pieces are starting to fit again. [Read more 🡒]

Jacoby Brissett Just Landed In A Huge NFL Opportunity

Jacoby Brissett is getting another chance to step into the spotlight, and this one comes with a team in urgent need of stability behind center. The Ravens are finalizing a trade with the Cardinals for the veteran quarterback after injuries wiped out their top two options, creating an opening for an experienced passer who can step in quickly and handle the moment.

For Brissett, the move offers a fresh start after being benched in Arizona, and it puts him back in the kind of high-pressure situation NFL teams often turn to him for. The timing also gives Baltimore a narrow runway to get him ready, with a debut date already circled as the Ravens try to patch together their quarterback room and keep the season moving. [Read more 🡒]
