NC State’s 2026 season has already taken a hard statistical turn.
The Wolfpack entered the year at No. 48 in ESPN’s SP+ rankings, but after six games that number has slipped all the way to No. 78 nationally. A 38-14 loss to Wake Forest last Saturday dropped NC State to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in ACC play, and it also pushed the Wolfpack down 18 more spots to No. 80 in SP+ before the latest public ratings settled at No.
- That’s a 30-place fall from preseason.
SP+ is ESPN’s opponent-adjusted model from Bill Connelly, built to measure offense, defense and special teams efficiency. It’s meant to show how strong a team really is, not just what its record says on the surface. Right now, that picture is not a flattering one for NC State.
The biggest issue has been on defense.
NC State started the season with an overall SP+ rating of +4.9. Six games later, that number sits at -1.3.
The offense has dipped a little, from 30.7 to 29.2, but the defense has been the real slide. The Wolfpack’s adjusted defensive rating has gone from 25.3 to 30.6, a jump of 5.3 points in the wrong direction.
And with defensive SP+, lower is better.
That lines up with what the Wolfpack has already given up on the field: 38 points to Wake Forest, 45 to Virginia and 31 to Vanderbilt. The offense hasn’t exactly carried the load either, but the model says the defensive drop-off has been the more damaging factor.
The remaining schedule still gives NC State a path to a bowl bid, but it’s a narrow one. With six games left, the Wolfpack needs three more wins to clear the traditional six-win benchmark for bowl eligibility.
According to updated SP+-based projections from The Sports Terminal, NC State is favored in three of those final six matchups:
- Oct. 23 at Stanford - NC State by 10.2
- Oct. 31 vs.
California - NC State by 7.1
- Nov. 7 vs.
Duke - Duke by 2.5
- Nov. 14 vs.
Syracuse - NC State by 4.0
- Nov. 21 at Florida State - Florida State by 8.0
- Nov. 28 at North Carolina - North Carolina by 6.9
Stanford is the best-looking game left on the board for NC State, with a projected 10.2-point win. California is next, with the Wolfpack projected by 7.1 points. Syracuse is also a favorable matchup, though the model only gives NC State a four-point edge.
The toughest tests are waiting at the end. Florida State and North Carolina are projected as losses, and the Duke game is the tightest of the bunch, with the Blue Devils favored by 2.5 points.
What makes the projections more interesting is that not every game has turned against NC State since preseason.
The Wolfpack’s outlook at Stanford has actually improved quite a bit. What started as a projected four-point win is now a 10.2-point margin. The California game has also become more favorable, moving from NC State by 4.5 to NC State by 7.1.
But other matchups have tilted the other way. Duke went from a projected NC State win to a projected loss, and the North Carolina game has swung sharply as well. The Tar Heels entered the year as just a 1.5-point favorite, but they’re now projected by 6.9.
Preseason expectations were already high enough to make this season a measuring stick. NC State’s win total line was 7.5, which meant the Wolfpack would have needed eight victories to cash over.
Nothing is locked in, of course. These are computer projections, not destiny. But if the model ends up being right, NC State is headed toward another season that falls short of the number it opened with.
If that happens, it would be the third time in the past five years that the Wolfpack has missed its preseason win total line.
