NC State Rugby Charges Toward Back-to-Back Titles
In an impressive display of athleticism and strategy, NC State's men's rugby team has secured their place in the national tournament, aiming for consecutive national titles-a first in the program's history. The Wolfpack dominated the CRC Terrapin 7's, a Division 1 qualifier, with a flawless 5-0 record, racking up 155 points while conceding only 26. That's an average of 31 points per game, showcasing their offensive prowess and defensive resilience.
Junior and club president Zach Piepho, a Raleigh local, was a standout, crossing the try line six times over the weekend. Meanwhile, John Skordoulis anchored the defense with five crucial tackles, preventing potential scores. The team secured decisive victories against JMU (38-0), Rutgers (36-0), UMass (26-0), Maryland (29-14), and Western Carolina (26-12) to clinch the tournament.
Earlier in the season, the Pack ventured to Florida, where they bested Clemson and the University of Florida but faced setbacks against Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, closing that tournament with a 2-2-1 record.
Last year, NC State entered the Collegiate Rugby Championship as a No. 2 seed, overcoming Temple, Tennessee, and Louisville before defeating UNC-Charlotte in a thrilling 12-7 championship match to claim the title. As of now, their seeding for this year's tournament remains undecided.
With their spot secured for the 2026 Collegiate Rugby Championship in Maryland from April 24-26, the Wolfpack joins University of Kentucky and Sam Houston State as early qualifiers for the Men's Division 1-AA tournament. The competition will feature 16 teams, with eight qualifying through tournaments and eight earning at-large bids, all vying for the championship in a fast-paced, March Madness-style bracket.
NC State is ready to take on the challenge, eager to defend their title and cement their legacy with another championship run.
