NC State’s opener against UVA comes with a few early tells that could say a lot about where both teams are headed, and the biggest one may be right up front.
The Wolfpack defense has to be sharper and more disruptive against the pass. Last season, NC State was awful on passing downs - the havoc rate was poor, the per-play numbers were poor, the EPA numbers were poor, and the whole thing was just ugly.
Virginia’s skill group isn’t exactly loaded with threats, and if Beau Pribula is still the starting quarterback - which doesn’t sound like it will last long - the ceiling there is limited. But give him four seconds on every dropback and he can look a lot better than the roster suggests.
That matchup between UVA’s offensive line and State’s defense may be the one that decides the game.
There’s also plenty riding on CJ Bailey. He’s at the point where everyone knows what he can be, and he’s being paid to show it.
Now comes the harder part: proving he can be the kind of quarterback who lifts his team to a big win. He’s doing it with a completely new receiver group, so State is going to need him to create some offense on the fly.
There will be missed connections and busted looks, and Bailey is going to have to clean some of that up in real time to keep drives alive. It’s Week 0, but this could already be the biggest game of his career.
And then there’s the defense’s personnel question with Harvey Dyson and Popo Aguirre. NC State needs both of them to matter.
They’re being counted on as important pieces, and it’s fair to call them high-floor players, but the real question is whether they can be good enough to noticeably raise the defense’s level. Aguirre has more ground to cover on that front, and if he turns into a clear difference-maker, that changes how people view this unit.
The room for error here is tiny. If either player has a rough day, or if either one gets hurt, that’s a major problem for State.
