NC State heads to Charlottesville on Saturday to open the 2026 football season against Virginia, and the early betting market has already started to move. The Wolfpack opened as a 5.5-point underdog, but that number has shifted to 4 points, with the total set at 52.5. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30pm on ESPN.
The experts, though, aren’t lined up in one neat column. The consensus leans Virginia, but plenty of the projections point to a game that stays tight into the finish.
CBS Sports isn’t picking a side. Its model came down on the Over, projecting the teams to combine for 55 points after running 10,000 simulations.
That clears the current number by a small margin, and the Over landed in more than 50% of those sims. The recent history between the teams backs up that kind of scoring range, too, since NC State and Virginia combined for 66 points in Raleigh last season, with the Wolfpack winning 35-31.
Action Network is taking a different route and siding with NC State. Their case leans heavily on Dave Doeren’s track record against Virginia.
As they put it: “Speaking of Doeren, he has owned Virginia, sporting a perfect 4-0 mark straight up against the Cavaliers. I think he makes it five straight while exposing the Hoos as nothing more than an also-ran in the ACC this season.”
The point is hard to miss: Doeren has never lost to the Cavaliers, with NC State beating Virginia in 2018, 2020, 2023 and 2025.
Most of the other projections tilt toward Virginia. College Football News has the Cavaliers winning 28-23, which would give Virginia the cover and send the game just Under the total at 51 points.
Dimers also ran 10,000 simulations and doesn’t love NC State’s chances, giving the Wolfpack a 39% chance to win and landing on Virginia 28, NC State 24. That score would hit the current spread exactly and come to 52 total points, which is half a point Under.
PFF’s two analysts both backed Virginia as well, though neither expected a blowout. Max Chadwick matched Dimers with Virginia 28, NC State 24. Dalton Wasserman saw a little more scoring, going with Virginia 31, NC State 28, a result that would push the total to 59 points.
ESPN Analytics was the most down on NC State of the bunch, giving the Wolfpack just a 31.9% chance to win. That leaves Virginia at 68.1% to start the season 1-0.
The broad picture is pretty clear: Virginia is the popular pick, but nobody is projecting a runaway. And NC State did show last season that it can cash as an underdog, winning two of its last three games in that role. The Wolfpack beat Florida State 21-11 as a 6.5-point underdog at home, got blown out 41-7 by Miami as a 14.5-point dog, and then pulled off one of its biggest wins of the year by beating #8 Georgia Tech 48-36 as a 4.5-point underdog.

NC States New Front Faces An Early ACC Test Up Front
Virginias offense is taking shape around an offensive line that should look familiar to Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. The Cavaliers return most of that group from last season, including two third-team All-ACC selections, and that continuity matters even as the rest of the offense turns over. The biggest change is at quarterback, where Beau Pribula arrives after a difficult season at Missouri, with Eli Holstein also in the mix as another possible answer under center.
That front will have to set the tone quickly because so many of the skill-position pieces are new. Virginia is also replacing its top running back after JMari Taylors 1,000-yard season, with Jekail Middlebrook stepping into that role, while a largely rebuilt receiving corps tries to grow up around the quarterback competition. Popo Aguirre has already given NC State another preseason talking point before taking a snap for the Wolfpack, landing on the 2026 Hispanic College Football Player of the Year Watch List. The inside linebacker is in his first season in Raleigh after spending three years at Miami, and his addition to the list adds to a growing bit of recognition for a roster that has already seen six players earn preseason watch list honors this year.
The award is presented by the Hispanic Football Hall of Fame, which also works to highlight Hispanic contributions to the sport. For NC State, Aguirre's inclusion is another sign that the program is drawing attention at multiple spots on the depth chart, and it gives the Wolfpack one more player to track as preseason recognition continues to stack up. Dave Doeren spent part of the lead-up to NC States opener making sure nobody inside the program treated Virginia like a soft landing spot. The Cavaliers are coming off the best season in program history, and under ACC Coach of the Year Tony Elliot they return the look of a team that knows what it is doing on both sides of the ball. Doeren pointed to Virginias experience as a real part of the challenge, with a roster that should be far more settled than the average early-season opponent.
For the Wolfpack, the assignment gets more complicated because Virginia also brings a quarterback situation that demands extra planning and a defense with some uncertainty attached. Doeren emphasized the value of earning a win over a strong opponent right away, which is exactly why this one carries more weight than a typical September opener. The only catch for NC State is that the Cavaliers may not be quite as settled as they appear, with one of their key defensive pieces still working through a major injury recovery heading into the game.
