NC State’s first trip to Stanford ended with the Cardinal offense piling up nearly 500 yards and the Wolfpack coming up short in a 31-28 Friday night loss in Stanford, CA.
The Pack did fight back from a 14-0 hole and briefly pulled even in the second quarter, but Stanford answered with 14 straight points and held NC State to just two scores after halftime. The Wolfpack also couldn’t slow the Cardinal on the ground, with Micah Ford grinding out 150 yards on 22 carries, the most by any player against NC State this season, even though all four Stanford touchdowns came through the air.
Quarterback CJ Bailey finished 17-for-30 for 256 yards with two touchdowns and added a team-high 59 rushing yards. Keenan Jackson was on the receiving end of Bailey’s other touchdown pass, giving him a team-leading sixth touchdown catch of the season.
Sophomore running back Deandre Desinor gave NC State its first spark, hauling in a ball between double coverage and turning it into a 58-yard touchdown. It was the first score of his career, and it blew past his previous career-long reception of five yards.
Will Wilson did the rest of the scoring on the ground for the Wolfpack, punching in two short touchdown runs from two yards out. Those scores tied the program record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, matching Scott Smith’s 18 from 1979, when he helped lead the ACC Championship team. Wilson now has eight rushing touchdowns this season, two shy of his total from last year.
With Duke Scott still recovering from injury, junior Davion Gause handled the bulk of the carries. The transfer finished with 15 rushes for 49 yards and added 51 receiving yards, with 47 coming after the catch.
NC State’s defense found one bright spot in the tackling column from junior defensive back Ronnie Royal III, who led the team with 10 stops, matching his personal best set against Notre Dame last season. Freshman Elijah Satchell recorded the Wolfpack’s lone sack, bringing the team’s season total to four.
Stanford set the tone early by opening the game with an 11-play drive from its own 16-yard line, converting both third downs before finishing with an eight-yard touchdown pass. After an NC State punt, the Cardinal went right back to work, marching on another long drive and capping it with a 17-yard touchdown throw for a 14-0 lead.
NC State finally answered on Desinor’s long touchdown, then got a key stop when Stanford tried a screen on 4th-and-20 from the Wolfpack 34 and was stuffed behind the line.
After a pair of punts, Bailey’s 23-yard run set up Wilson’s first two-yard touchdown and tied the game at 14. But Stanford closed the half with a 90-yard drive in 1:29 to reclaim the lead, sending NC State to the break down 21-14. It was the second time this season the Wolfpack trailed at halftime, and they are now 1-1 in those games.
The Cardinal kept rolling out of halftime, going 84 yards on another long field to push the lead back to 14. NC State answered with an 18-play, 86-yard march that took more than nine minutes and ended with Wilson’s second touchdown of the night on the first play of the fourth quarter. Bailey kept the drive alive with a crucial fourth-and-one completion to Snow.
Bailey later threw a 16-yard touchdown pass, but the Wolfpack couldn’t recover the onside kick, and that ended the scoring.
The loss leaves the all-time series tied at 1-1. NC State returns home to face California on Saturday, October 31st for homecoming. Kickoff is set for noon on the ACC Network.

NC State Finally Made The Dave Doeren Decision Fans Feared
A rough start to the 2026 season finally caught up to Dave Doeren, as NC State moved on from the longtime coach after the Wolfpack fell to 3-4 with a loss to Stanford. Doeren had spent 14 seasons in Raleigh and was the longest-tenured coach in modern NC State football history, building a 98-74 record while overseeing one of the program's steadiest stretches.
The timing only sharpened the sense that the decision had been building for a while, especially after a loss to a Stanford team that had struggled in its own right. Even with Doeren under contract through 2029, the Wolfpack chose to make a change now, leaving the program to sort out what comes next after a disappointing opening half to the year. [Read more 🡒]
NC State Showed A Different Offensive Look Fans Needed To See
NC State wrapped up its offseason with a convincing 128-64 exhibition win over Lenoir-Rhyne at the Lenovo Center, and the bigger takeaway was the different kind of offense it put on display. The ball moved, the scoring came from multiple spots, and the frontcourt looked far more involved than it had at times in the past, which is exactly the sort of balance the Wolfpack wanted to show before the real games begin.
Ven-Allen Lubin was a force inside, while Paul McNeil gave the perimeter attack a needed spark and Robert Jurkovi added efficient production of his own. For a team trying to settle into its identity, the exhibition offered a useful snapshot of what this group can look like when the offense is flowing, with the season opener against Campbell now the next chance to see whether that rhythm carries over. NC State Just Showed The Kind Of Offense Fans Will Notice
For a fan base still looking to see what this offense can become, NC State offered a loud early answer in an exhibition win over Lenoir-Rhyne. The Wolfpack scored at will from the opening stretch, shot 75.0 percent from the field and 90.9 percent at the line in the first half, and turned the game into a runaway long before the final buzzer.
The scoring came from all over, but the sharpest signs were in the places the Pack has wanted to see improvement, namely shot-making and pace. Even with the result never really in doubt, the performance had the feel of a team that could make opponents work for every possession if this kind of efficiency carries over into the real games.
