NC State got a short-term win in the KaTron Evans eligibility fight, and for now the Wolfpack defensive lineman can keep moving forward with the team.
A federal judge has granted Evans “temporary relief,” which makes him eligible to participate through Aug. 24 unless the order is extended. That gives him the chance to keep practicing and preparing while his case against the NCAA works through the court system.
The catch is obvious: NC State’s first game is Aug. 29, so this ruling does not yet cover the start of the season.
The next key date comes on Aug. 18, when an administrative conference is scheduled to set the timeline for the case. That meeting will help determine how the lawsuit proceeds, including when the hearing on Evans’ request for a longer-term injunction will take place.
In plain terms, Evans can play right now, but his status for the full 2026 season is still unsettled.
The path to this point has unfolded over the past several weeks. Evans started his college career in 2021, played the 2025 season at Marshall, and then transferred to NC State for the 2026 season. The NCAA denied his waiver request, and after he went through the appeal process without success, he took the matter to federal court.
Last week, Evans filed a lawsuit against the NCAA seeking another season of eligibility and asking the court to step in while the larger case is litigated.
NC State has backed Evans through the process, and the Wolfpack at least has an immediate answer to one of the biggest questions on its defensive line heading into the season.
The Aug. 18 conference could become the next major hinge point, but it is not meant to settle the entire case that day. Instead, the court and the parties will use it to set the schedule and map out when the arguments over longer-term relief will be heard.
That leaves two separate questions on the table. Evans is eligible now, and the judge’s order keeps him eligible through Aug. 24 unless extended. But whether he can stay on the field for all of 2026 remains undecided.
For NC State, though, the temporary ruling matters. Evans was expected to be a major part of the defensive line after arriving this offseason, and at least for now, the Wolfpack can keep him in the building and on the field while the legal fight continues.
