NC State’s defensive front just got a major boost, and the Wolfpack can finally move ahead with Ka’Tron Evans locked in for the rest of the 2026 season.
Evans, the 335-pound nose guard Dave Doeren recently said was around 350 pounds just a few weeks ago, won his court case against the NCAA and has been cleared to play the remainder of the year. For NC State, that wipes away a month of uncertainty and secures a key interior piece heading into the stretch run.
The legal timeline had been moving quickly. On August 10th, a judge granted Evans temporary relief that allowed him to play for NC State through August 24th unless the order was extended. An administrative conference followed on August 18th to map out the case and determine how Evans’ request for a preliminary injunction would move forward.
That conference also produced a schedule that gave Evans enough time to be on the field against Virginia in the season opener. The NCAA had until August 27th to respond to his motion, and Evans then had until September 3rd to file his reply. If oral arguments were needed, a hearing on the preliminary injunction had been tentatively set for today.
In the end, Evans got the outcome NC State was waiting for: eligibility for the full 2026 season.
He already showed why the Wolfpack wanted him in the middle. Against Virginia, Evans logged 5 tackles in 29 defensive snaps, which was actually one more snap than starter Josiah Victor played. That came after a solid 2025 season at Marshall, where he posted 12 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in 11 games and earned an overall PFF grade of 64.1.
Before Marshall, Evans spent the 2024 season at Charlotte and finished with eight tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery. He opened his college career at Jackson State, where he totaled 14 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks over 12 games under Deion Sanders.
Evans arrived at NC State with a big recruiting resume, too. He was a consensus 4-star prospect in the 2021 class, and Rivals had him ranked No. 149 overall nationally, No. 13 among defensive linemen and No. 6 in Maryland.
For a Wolfpack defense looking for depth and experience on the interior, that kind of body and track record matters. NC State needed size in the middle of the line, and Evans brings exactly that. Now, with the legal cloud gone, the plan can move forward without any more detours.
