NC State’s roster budget has become part of the conversation after The Athletic published estimated spending ranges for every Power 4 program, but the number attached to the Wolfpack appears to be well off the mark.
The Athletic’s interactive graphic put NC State at $22-26 million for the 2025-26 cycle, a figure that would place the program in the middle third of the sport and ahead of most ACC peers. Chris Vannini and his staff framed the project as an attempt to organize a number that is usually guessed at or pieced together, and Vannini was careful to say the figures were ranges, not hard facts.
In a follow-up post, he explained why the report used estimates in the first place. Coaches tend to downplay budget numbers to keep expectations in check and prevent players from pushing for more, while administrators have the opposite incentive because larger totals make them look stronger as fundraisers. Vannini also said his staff “examined [administrators’] figures more skeptically,” and noted that even people inside a program often do not know the exact number.
That caution matters. Once a number gets attached to a school, the fine print disappears fast.
After the report was published, multiple sources close to this part of NC State’s program - people with intimate knowledge of the school’s NIL and roster spending - were asked about the range. The response was consistent: it is too high.
One source, when asked where a figure in that range could have come from, put it this way:
“No idea, but that list is creating expectation way beyond what is real.”
That is the danger of a project like this. It may be a reasonable journalistic exercise, but once a dollar figure is out there, it takes on a life of its own.
Fans start comparing the roster to the price tag. Boosters start wondering why the team does not look like a $24 million roster.
Rival fan bases grab the number and run with it. Recruits and families see it and adjust their expectations.
The disclaimer does not travel with the headline.
Based on those conversations, NC State is not the only program whose estimate appears to miss the mark.
