NC State Faces A Brutal Test In A Rivalry They Need Back

With NC State eager to defy odds as a home underdog, their matchup against Duke promises a thrilling showdown in this heated ACC rivalry.

NC State gets another shot at building something when Duke walks into Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday, and the Wolfpack will do it as a 5.5-point home underdog.

The matchup carries an over/under of 50.5 points, setting up a game that could hinge on whether NC State can carry over the confidence from its 31-10 win over California. That victory gave the Wolfpack their first under interim head coach Todd Goebbel, who stepped in after Dave Doeren’s dismissal.

At 4-4 overall and 2-3 in ACC play, NC State is trying to stack wins and keep its postseason hopes alive. Duke arrives at 6-2 and still in the ACC race after a lopsided 47-2 win over Boston College, a result that only added to the sense that the Blue Devils are putting together a strong season.

For NC State, the spotlight keeps coming back to quarterback CJ Bailey. The third-year signal caller has had an uneven season, but the Wolfpack need him to find a groove if they want to threaten Duke’s defense. That’s no small task: the Blue Devils rank No. 1 in the ACC in total defense.

Bailey’s early rhythm could matter a lot in this one. NC State will need enough balance between the pass and the run to avoid letting Duke control the tempo and squeeze the life out of the game.

Duke’s offense brings its own problems. Walker Eget is directing the attack, and Nate Sheppard has been a major force in the backfield. Through eight games, Sheppard has piled up 972 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, production that could stress an NC State defense that has had trouble consistently getting stops.

The Wolfpack have to do a better job of limiting explosive plays and getting off the field on third down if they want to slow that group down. Duke has shown it can score, and NC State’s defense will be tested on every level.

There’s also the rivalry angle. Duke has won the last three meetings, including a 45-33 victory over NC State in 2025. That recent run gives the Blue Devils the edge in the series, but Saturday gives the Wolfpack a chance to change the tone at home.

For NC State, the path is pretty clear: build off the California win, keep Bailey upright, and make Duke earn everything on the ground. For the Blue Devils, it’s about taking that momentum on the road and proving they can handle a tough environment in Raleigh.

NC State Basketball Opens With Justin Gaineys Biggest Test Just Beginning

Justin Gaineys return to Raleigh has given NC State basketball a familiar face at the top and a fresh start on the sideline. The former Wolfpack player brings two decades of Division 1 coaching experience with him, and after a pair of preseason exhibition wins, the program now turns to the regular season with Campbell up first and bigger ACC questions waiting soon after.

For Gainey, the early stretch is about more than just results. He has made clear that culture and development will be central as NC State tries to climb in a league that rarely gives anyone much breathing room, and the first real test of how quickly that message takes hold begins now. NC State Sent A Strong Message In Its First Game After Change

The first game after the change could have gone sideways early, but NC State settled in and left with a convincing 31-10 win over Cal. The offense looked stuck in the first half, then came out of the break with a better rhythm and turned halftime adjustments into a flurry of second-half touchdowns, while the defense kept the Bears from finding any answer after intermission.

Charlton Warrens unit set the tone with a second-half shutout, giving the Wolfpack the kind of response that usually matters most in a transition game. Interim coach Todd Goebbel said the group stayed locked in on fundamentals, and for NC State, the bigger takeaway may be how quickly the team translated a difficult opening into a clean finish. NC State Opener Will Show If This Wolfpack Identity Is Real

As NC State gets ready to open the season against Campbell, the early read on this Wolfpack team is less about the opponent than about whether the habits coach Gainey has been talking about are actually taking hold. Gainey, back in Raleigh and coming off three exhibition games, has spent the last few weeks sorting through a rotation and weighing how the group fits together, with the opener offering the first real chance to see how much of that work translates once the games count.

Campbell brings a fresh challenge of its own with first-year Division I coach Jimmie Williams and a roster that does not have much Division I experience, but NC States bigger concern is internal. The Wolfpack know they need to be better on the glass, especially after the exhibitions exposed issues with rebounding and second chances, and that area could say plenty about how real this teams identity is from the start.
