NC State Coaching Search May Be Closing In On The Name Fans Want

As speculation grows around NC State's coaching prospects, all eyes are on potential candidates, including former Wolfpack standout Philip Rivers, with rumors swirling after their intriguing jet-setting search strategy.

NC State’s coaching search is starting to look a lot less like a guessing game and a lot more like a flight pattern.

The donor planes tied to the search were wheels-up yesterday, and by the time the tracking crowd got done working, two stops stood out: New York and Memphis. That was enough to get the fanbase buzzing, and for good reason. When a job opens at NC State, this crowd knows how to read the skies.

The New York stop is the one that jumps off the page first. Bill Cowher lives there now, and while he once called Raleigh home, he sold his house in 2018 and has been based in New York ever since while working as a CBS Sports NFL analyst.

Cowher is also one of the names on the advisory group Chancellor Kevin Howell and Athletics Director Boo Corrigan announced two days ago, along with Dewayne Washington. That makes the White Plains landing feel like more than a coincidence.

A face-to-face meeting with Cowher, and possibly Washington too, fits the picture.

Then came Memphis, and that’s where the search got even more intriguing.

There are two obvious directions people have gone with that flight. One is Charles Huff, since Adam Rittenberg mentioned the Memphis head coach as a possible NC State candidate.

The other is Philip Rivers, whose agent Jimmy Sexton runs his operation out of Memphis. Rivers is represented by Sexton of CAA, and while the agency has offices in New York, Memphis has long been Sexton’s base.

That’s the lane this appears to be moving in. These kinds of meetings usually happen away from the coach’s market and the school’s market, and Memphis would make sense if NC State is trying to keep things quiet. It also lines up with what has been circulating around this search.

There’s another CAA thread worth noting, too. Josh Allen is also a CAA client, and that connection may have helped get Rivers into the conversation with the Buffalo Bills in the first place.

On our podcast, Will Brinson said he believed that if the Bills hadn’t hired who they hired, they would have hired Rivers. Hard to say exactly how that all shook out, but Buffalo was clearly in the Josh Allen window, and that kind of urgency likely helped shape the process.

The rumblings are getting louder by the hour. The host of the ‘Sunday Service’ podcast said he had heard from a good source that NC State is going to hire Philip Rivers.

On X, Mikey V. posted, "The rumors have been swirling already, but I have it from a good source that former NFL and NC State star quarterback Phillip Rivers, will indeed be hired as the next head football coach at NC State. Announcement pending.

#P2M"

Is Mikey V. a lock? No. But he does have a sizable following and a successful podcast, and this is not exactly drifting far from what’s been heard elsewhere.

One of the more telling things about this search: Pack Pride hasn’t put out a big board. That’s unusual, especially for an opening like this one.

In every other NC State coaching search, that kind of list has been part of the process. Not this time.

There’s also the question of what Cowher and Washington are actually doing in this search. Are they simply advisors on a committee, or is there more to it than that?

If what’s being heard is accurate, it’s fair to wonder how much actual selection is still happening. Publicly attaching two names like that to a coaching search suggests a little more than a rubber stamp.

No one is saying they’ll join the staff, but there’s at least a world where they help shape the early framework of the next era, including staff building and the first roster.

And while Rivers chatter continues to build, we asked Coach Gainey about the bigger-picture decision of taking a home job, knowing the upside and the risk that come with it.

PACK PRIDE: Coach, this is likely relevant on a few different levels, but as somebody who played here and now has the opportunity to coach here, how did you weigh the decision to take this job? There are positives because you know the fan base and the university, but also the possibility of things not working out.

Did that enter your mind? How did you think through that with your family?

Gainey: It didn’t really enter my mind. It didn’t.

When the opportunity came, the timing of it, I was kind of preoccupied with something else at the time. We were playing, but also just kind of watching it afar and how everything transpired here.

To have that opportunity, I felt like I had to do it because this is home and home wasn’t handled right. I felt like it was like, I love this place.

I absolutely love NC State. I love Raleigh.

Two of my kids were born here. It gave me a start.

It’s always been here for me.

I felt like when the opportunity was presented, it was my chance to be there for NC State.

That’s how I approached it. The negatives or whatever perceived negatives of it, it is what it is.

I’ll have to deal with it, but I will always call this home. I will always be thankful for what this university did for me as an 18-year-old stepping foot on campus and helping me develop as a man.

What this university did for me when I’m trying to figure out what I do next in my life. What I do next in life.

I owe this university a ton.

This is the least I can do to repay everybody here that has supported me throughout my years as a student-athlete.

NC States New Era Starts With Pressure Fans Can Already Feel

Justin Gainey is back in Raleigh, this time as the man in charge after coming home to NC State following his run as an assistant at Tennessee. The Wolfpacks opener against Campbell will be the first look at how the new staffs version of the program takes shape, with returning starters Paul McNeil Jr. and Ven-Allen Lubin giving the roster a starting point and several transfers expected to play major roles right away.

Campbell brings its own uncertainty into the matchup, having rebuilt under first-year coach Jimmie Williams, which adds a little extra intrigue to a season opener that already carries plenty of attention. For NC State, though, the bigger storyline is the pressure around a fresh start and the expectation that Gaineys arrival can quickly steady a program that has been searching for direction. NC State Faces A Brutal Test After Its Sudden Coaching Shakeup

NC States abrupt midseason coaching change has left the program in unfamiliar territory, with the Wolfpack trying to steady itself after parting ways with Dave Doeren in a move that had never happened before in the schools football history. The shakeup comes at a difficult time, too, with the roster already dealing with injuries and the usual late-season wear that can make every week feel harder than the last.

The attention now turns to how the team responds under new leadership and whether it can keep its focus through the final stretch. Changes in the personnel room have added to the uncertainty, and the Wolfpack will have to sort through the fallout while still trying to salvage the rest of the season. [Read more 🡒]

NC States Bowl With Cal Feels Bigger Than A Typical Messy Matchup

Californias bowl season has become less about one last chance to play football and more about trying to piece together an offense under difficult circumstances. Tosh Lupois first year as head coach has been marked by injuries and coaching changes, and the Bears have already had to shuffle responsibilities after Jordan Somerville was relieved of play-calling duties early in the season. The rushing game has been a particular problem, which only adds to the sense that this matchup is arriving with Cal in a very fragile place.

The personnel picture heading into the bowl keeps tightening for the Bears, and that is where the concern starts to sharpen for NC State. Cal could be missing key pieces across the offense, from the backfield to the line to the receiving corps, leaving the Wolfpack to prepare for a team that may look very different from the one it scouted during the regular season. For a bowl game that already had the feel of a messy December assignment, the uncertainty around who Cal can actually put on the field gives it a little more edge. [Read more 🡒]
