One of the fastest-rising names in the 2027 class is down to a decision date. Four-star small forward Asa Montgomery will announce his commitment Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. ET after taking official visits to LSU, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and UConn.
Montgomery, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound prospect from Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove, has surged in the rankings and now sits at No. 14 overall in the latest update, a leap of 28 spots that has pushed him firmly into the top tier of the class.
His choice will come from a group of five programs that each got an official visit as his recruitment moved toward the finish line.
Montgomery’s rise has been fueled by what he showed in two very different settings this summer. In the EYCL, he had the ball in his hands and produced as a high-volume scorer, averaging 27.9 points on 54/34/76 shooting, plus 10.2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3.3 stocks - 1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks - per game.
With USA Basketball, the role changed, and so did his job. There, he embraced being a complementary four, bringing energy, offensive rebounding, cutting, defensive versatility and playmaking in fullcourt pressure, even if he was, at times, more hesitant to let it fly.
That contrast helps explain why scouts see so much room for growth. At 6-foot-6 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan and a naturally broader frame, Montgomery projects as a combo forward who is moving from a stretch-four look into more of a bigger wing.
He’s explosive off two feet, times his jumps well and shows up in transition and as a cutter. He isn’t viewed as a flashy creator with the dribble, but he is a reliable shooting threat who can pick and pop, attack closeouts, work from the midpost and crash the offensive glass.
Defensively, he brings the kind of instincts coaches love. He tracks the ball well, rebounds effectively enough to hold up against opposing fours and can switch onto the ball. Even in FIBA competition, he showed he could get his hands on plenty of balls and hold his own in a variety of matchups.
What stands out most is the blend of immediate usefulness and long-term upside. Montgomery is willing to do the small stuff that gets him on the floor quickly, while still carrying clear room to add to the scoring and skill package he has shown on the grassroots circuit. He is also young for his grade and won’t turn 18 until July after his senior year, leaving plenty of runway for that development.

NC State Now Faces One Test After A Stunning Program Shakeup
NC States season has taken a sharp turn in the days after a difficult road loss at Stanford, with the program suddenly trying to regroup under a very different staff structure. The Wolfpack still have a game to prepare for at home against California, but the bigger story inside the building is how quickly the focus has shifted from one frustrating defeat to a broader reset in the football operation.
For now, co-defensive coordinator Charlton Warren is handling the defensive play-calling, and the message around the team has centered on finishing better in every phase. Tight end Preston Douglas said the Wolfpack need to finish plays, finish drives and finish games, which is about as plain a description as there is for where NC State stands heading into its next test. NC State Just Sent A Strong Message About Its Next Coach
NC State is making it clear what comes next after the firing of Dave Doeren. Chancellor Kevin Howell and athletic director Boo Corrigan sent a letter to fans laying out the football coaching search, and the message was as much about the programs direction as it was about the vacancy itself. The school is leaning into a broader pitch about where the Wolfpack football program should be headed and what kind of commitment it plans to make along the way.
The search is being guided with some notable outside help, too, with Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher and former NFL player Dewayne Washington serving as advisors to Corrigan. In the letter, the school underscored its belief that NC State belongs in the annual conversation for the ACC race and the College Football Playoff, while also signaling that it intends to back that ambition with financial investment. The next hire will be asked to match that standard from day one, which is exactly the point the school seems eager to make. [Read more 🡒]
NC State Just Got The Recruiting Jolt Fans Feared After Doeren
The first real hit to NC States 2027 class came quickly after Dave Doerens firing, as three-star offensive tackle Conner Rutherford backed out of his pledge. Rutherford had been the fourth-highest-ranked commit in the group, and his departure immediately put a little more strain on a class that had already been one of the more important long-range building blocks on the board.
The Wolfpack still have 18 verbal commitments, but this is the kind of opening that can lead to more movement if the coaching search drags on. The class is sitting 43rd nationally and 10th in the ACC, and with speculation already circling about Philip Rivers as a possible next head coach, the real question now is whether NC State can keep the rest of that group intact long enough to make this transition look manageable.
