Former NC State forward Levi Watkins is getting his first shot as a high school head coach, taking over at Green Hope High School.
Watkins’ path to this job has been a long one, and it started in Raleigh. He played for the Wolfpack from 2001-05, appearing in 97 games across four seasons. During that stretch, he averaged 5.1 points and 2.1 rebounds while logging 16.9 minutes per game and earning 20 starts.
Once his playing career ended, Watkins stayed close to the program and moved onto Herb Sendek’s staff, working under his former coach at NC State. In 2005-06, Sendek’s final season in Raleigh, Watkins was an administrative coordinator. When Sidney Lowe took over, Watkins remained with the Wolfpack and was promoted to video coordinator, a position he held for three seasons.
He kept climbing from there. Before the 2009-10 season, Watkins became Director of Operations and spent four years in that role in Raleigh, with the first two under Lowe and the next two under Mark Gottfried.
Watkins eventually broke into the college coaching ranks in 2013 as an assistant at Buffalo under Bobby Hurley. The next year, he reunited with Sendek at Arizona State and spent three seasons with the Sun Devils. After that, he went back east for a four-year run as an assistant at Ole Miss.
After nine seasons away from NC State, Watkins returned to Raleigh as one of Kevin Keatts’ assistant coaches, a post he held until Keatts was fired.
Now he’s bringing that experience to Green Hope. Watkins has built a résumé that includes college coaching, recruiting and post-player development, along with the kind of behind-the-scenes work that comes from spending years around a basketball operation.
He also arrives with serious high school credentials. Watkins was a Parade All-American in 2001 and the Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland.
At Green Hope, he takes over for Richard Howell, who was also a forward at NC State. The program is coming off an 8-16 overall season and a 1-11 mark in conference play.
One date already stands out on the schedule: November 17th, when Green Hope meets Broughton High School. Broughton is coached by another former NC State player, Scott Wood, and Ralston Turner and Staats Battle, who also played basketball with the Wolfpack, are on Wood’s staff.
