The Duke Blue Devils have spent the offseason building toward another run at the top, and one of the biggest questions hanging over their recruiting picture involves a name already drawing major attention: Yann Kamagate.
Kamagate, a 2028 big man ranked No. 2 overall in the class, is developing into one of the premier prospects in the country. The St. Francis High School (CA) product is also now being mentioned as a candidate to move up a class, which would put him on a faster track than expected.
That possibility surfaced after AJ Williams announced earlier in the week that he was reclassifying from 2028 to 2027. Kamagate could follow a similar path, according to a report from Finkelstein.
"Yann Kamagate turns 18 in the fall, I believe in September," Finkelstein said. "That's relevant for two reasons. Number one, he's definitely old enough to be one-and-done eligible for the NBA, but he's not so old that he would lose eligibility off his clock in this current 5-for-5 NCAA age-based model."
"So he's got a real decision to make. If he thinks he's a pro sooner rather than later, I would expect him to reclassify up.
If he's trying to maximize his earning potential in college basketball and he sees himself staying multiple years, then it would make sense for him to stay in the class of 2028. If I were a betting man, I would probably wager on the former."
For Duke, the appeal is obvious. Jon Scheyer and his staff have kept the pipeline stocked, and the Blue Devils are looking to keep adding talent as they chase another Final Four after last season’s run fell short in the Elite Eight against UConn. Duke won the ACC regular season and conference tournament, finished with just two regular-season losses, and earned a No. 1 seed before that 19-point lead slipped away.
Kamagate would be a major addition to that future roster, but the Blue Devils are far from alone. He already holds more than 20 offers, so if he does decide to move up, Duke will have plenty of competition to beat out.
