Week 5 turned the ACC quarterback picture upside down, and the fallout is already reshaping the league’s Week 6 rankings.
Two of the conference’s more recognizable starters came out of last weekend with injury concerns. Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Heintschel was lost for the season with a torn ACL in the Panthers’ 35-33 win at Virginia Tech on Friday. California quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele entered concussion protocol after the Golden Bears’ 39-31 loss at UNLV.
The hits kept coming beyond the injury report. Beau Pribula and Davis Warren both slipped out of this week’s top eight after rough afternoons that left Virginia and Stanford buried in big deficits they couldn’t escape.
Syracuse also made its first quarterback change of the year, turning to Kennesaw State transfer Amari Odom over Steve Angeli. Odom responded by steering the Orange to a 42-41 overtime escape against Connecticut.
But the week wasn’t all bad news for ACC passers. CJ Bailey and Lincoln Kienholz put on one of the league’s best quarterback showdowns in NC State’s 31-28 win over Louisville. Gio Lopez powered Wake Forest to a 57-3 blowout of Stanford, and Ashton Daniels did most of his damage on the ground in Florida State’s 38-7 rout of Virginia.
With Week 6 underway, Daniels and Kienholz will meet Friday night at Louisville. Florida State is trying to keep the momentum rolling after its big win, while the Cardinals are looking to stop a two-game ACC skid. On Saturday, the most compelling quarterback matchup lands in Raleigh at noon, where Bailey will try to build on NC State’s win and Lopez will try to push Wake Forest to a third straight ACC victory.
Here’s how the top ACC quarterbacks stack up entering Week 6 of the 2026 season.
Daniels didn’t need a huge passing line to matter against Virginia. He went 12-of-19 for 183 yards and an interception, but his legs carried the day.
Daniels ran for 136 yards and five touchdowns, including an 81-yard score in the third quarter. Florida State now heads to Louisville for a 7 p.m.
EDT kickoff on ESPN, and the Cardinals have not kept an opposing Power Four offense under 30 points this season.
Odom’s first start gave Syracuse exactly the spark it needed in its overtime win at Connecticut. He threw for 335 yards and five touchdowns, added the Orange’s only rushing touchdown, and also scored the game-winning two-point conversion.
Syracuse next goes to Virginia for a 7:30 p.m. EDT game on ACC Network, and the Cavaliers have already shown vulnerability against mobile quarterbacks, with both Michael Hawkins Jr. and Ashton Daniels topping 100 rushing yards against them.
Bailey is back in the rankings after a strong showing in NC State’s win over Louisville, a turnaround after uneven starts at Virginia and Vanderbilt. He threw touchdown passes to Keenan Jackson and Tyran Warren and finished with 373 passing yards, though an interception nearly swung the game back to Louisville in the fourth quarter. NC State stays home to face Wake Forest at noon on CW, and Davis Warren is the only Power Four quarterback the Demon Deacons have truly knocked off balance this season.
Grunkemeyer’s day in Virginia Tech’s loss at Pittsburgh was productive despite the result. Both of his interceptions came on plays where defenders made strong breaks on the ball, and he still threw for 434 yards and three touchdowns.
Even with a missed game-winning field goal from his kicker, he put the Hokies in position to win. Virginia Tech now travels across the country to California for a 3:30 p.m.
EDT kickoff on ACC Network, and the Golden Bears have generally limited damage through the air while struggling against the run in losses to UCLA, Clemson and UNLV.
Lopez didn’t have to play in the fourth quarter of Wake Forest’s rout of Stanford, and that tells the story of the night. He led the Demon Deacons on the ground with 88 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for two more, including a tightly contested strike to Jack Foley.
Wake Forest’s next stop is NC State at noon on CW. Louisville gave the Wolfpack a real fight last weekend, but a costly turnover kept the Cardinals from another late comeback.
Jennings handled rainy conditions well in SMU’s 25-16 win over Boston College. He found Randy Pittman for his first touchdown pass and Derrick McFall on a wheel route for his second, then added a four-yard rushing score. SMU returns from its bye to face Virginia, and the Cavaliers’ problems defending the run were on display when Ashton Daniels broke loose for 136 yards against them in the 38-7 loss at Florida State.
Kienholz was sharp for much of Louisville’s loss at NC State, with his lone mistake coming on a strip sack on a pass attempt in the third quarter. He connected with Lawayne McCoy on a well-placed touchdown pass in the second quarter and finished with 254 yards and two touchdowns, while also punishing the Wolfpack on the ground at times.
Louisville gets Florida State at home Friday at 7 p.m. EDT on ESPN, and the Seminoles looked far more composed against Beau Pribula after rough outings against Kevin Jennings and Keelon Russell.
Mensah’s line in Miami’s 41-13 win at Clemson wasn’t as clean as some of the others near the top, but he still found ways to tilt the game. His only touchdown pass came on an early screen to Cooper Barkate, yet he also ran for a 34-yard touchdown and completed a 17-yard third-down throw to Malachi Toney with two defenders in his face. Miami is off in Week 6, and its next test comes against a Florida State defense that held Virginia to 205 yards after ugly showings against SMU and Alabama.

NC States New Big Man Could Fit This Fast Style Perfectly
Robert Jurkovics path to Raleigh has already come with the usual adjustments that follow a move from Europe to the U.S., but the NC State newcomer sounds eager for the change in style as much as the change in scenery. He said the faster pace of play here is different from what he knew overseas, and thats exactly the kind of shift that can make a frontcourt addition stand out in the Wolfpacks system.
Jurkovic also described himself as a big man with a high basketball IQ and a jumper that can stretch the floor, traits that fit neatly with a team looking for versatility inside. Just as important, he pointed to the energy and involvement of coach Justin Gainey and his staff as a major reason for coming to NC State, a reminder that the Wolfpacks appeal is about more than fit on the court. NC State Faces A Serious Problem Ahead Of Wake Forest
NC State heads into its matchup with Wake Forest already dealing with a roster squeeze that could force multiple lineup changes on both sides of the ball. The Wolfpack have officially ruled out four starters, including running back Duke Scott, left guard Yousef Mugharbil, center Spike Sowells Jr. and safety Tristan Teasdell, leaving obvious holes to fill as the week unfolds.
The ripple effect does not stop there, either. Four more players, including three starters, are listed as questionable, which puts even more pressure on the offensive line and secondary to hold together if the Wolfpack are going to sort through this injury situation in time for kickoff. NC State Suddenly Has A Protection Problem It Can't Ignore
NC States offensive line took another hit this week when center Spike Sowells was ruled out for the rest of the 2026 season after a shoulder injury, according to head coach Dave Doeren. Sowells had already sat out three games and was not available for the upcoming Wake Forest matchup, but the bigger concern for the Wolfpack is what his absence means for a group that has already been forced to adjust on the fly.
The line now has to keep finding answers without one of its key anchors, and the ripple effects could be felt again against Wake Forest. With Sowells sidelined, NC State will need more shuffling up front as it tries to protect its offense and settle on a combination it can trust for the stretch run. [Read more 🡒]
