The Tennessee Titans are embracing their roots with a fresh twist on their classic Houston Oilers look, unveiling new uniforms that blend nostalgia with modern flair. Revealed at a special event at The Pinnacle in Nashville, these uniforms reflect a nod to the past while embracing the future.
The Titans, who sported Oilers throwbacks in 2023 and 2024, are bringing back the iconic light "Titans blue" as the main color for their home jerseys. These jerseys feature block numerals outlined in red, reminiscent of the Oilers' classic style.
Navy blue, once a dominant color since the team's rebranding in 1999, is now a secondary shade, making subtle appearances like the six-string stripe on the sleeves-a tribute to Nashville's Music City heritage. This stripe also adorns the pants and helmet, while navy touches the small three-star logo and neck tag.
For road games, the Titans will don white uniforms with light blue numbers, again trimmed in red. Two pant options are available: white for home games and a choice between light blue or white for away games. The home jerseys feature "Titans" above the numbers, while the road jerseys display "Tennessee."
The helmet has undergone a retro transformation as well. The Titans are moving away from the navy blue helmet with fireball flames to a white helmet featuring a blue circle and updated "T" with three stars, echoing the Oilers' legacy.
The light blue circle, outlined in red, and the smooth, thickened "T" add a sturdy, modern touch. A light blue stripe runs down the helmet's center, and the facemask is white, a nod to the late '90s Oilers.
This uniform change aligns with the Titans' efforts to secure a new stadium, a process that began in 2017. Titans president Burke Nihill shared that fan input played a significant role in the redesign.
Through surveys and focus groups, fans expressed a deep connection to the Oilers' look, which resonated with players as well. Nihill noted, “We were overwhelmed by the popularity of the Oilers throwbacks.”
The updated uniforms maintain the Oilers' essence while incorporating modern elements like the revamped helmet and jersey sleeves. “It’s our history and our legacy,” Nihill stated, emphasizing the blend of tradition and Tennessee pride.
The unveiling event was a spectacle, featuring a 50-piece orchestra and a light show. Titans fan and NFL Network personality Kyle Brandt emceed, with interviews from current and former players adding to the excitement. Legendary running back Eddie George highlighted the franchise's storied past before the big reveal, where quarterback Cam Ward and defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons showcased the new uniforms.
With a simplified color palette of Titans light blue, white, red, and traces of navy, the team’s new look is both classic and unique. As Titans vice president of brand marketing Erin Swartz explained, “We are the only team in the NFL that has this particular shade of blue.”
The new jerseys and merchandise became available online following the unveiling, with the team store opening the next day, ready to embrace a new era while honoring the past.
