Predators Blue Line Shuffle Just Put One Depth Role In Doubt

The Nashville Predators shake up their defense lineup by claiming Daemon Hunt while placing Jack Ahcan on waivers, signaling bold moves by GM Chris MacFarland.

The Predators have made another move on the back end, claiming defenseman Daemon Hunt off waivers from the Wild and sending Jack Ahcan to waivers in a corresponding transaction.

Michael Russo of The Athletic first reported the Hunt claim, while Nick Kieser of Lower Broad Pucks relayed the Ahcan waiver placement. Ahcan will be given non-roster status for now.

For Hunt, this is the second time in just over a year that he’s been caught up in the waiver churn. He didn’t crack Columbus’ roster out of training camp last season, and Minnesota stepped in to claim him after he had previously been part of the package sent to the Blue Jackets in the David Jiricek deal back in November 2024.

The 24-year-old’s season in Minnesota had its ups and downs. He missed 10 games with an undisclosed injury and was in the lineup a little under half the time when healthy, but he still set a career high with 32 games played in 2025-26.

In those appearances, Hunt picked up six assists and 43 blocked shots while averaging 12:26 of ice time per game. Across his NHL career, he has seven assists in 56 games and is on a one-year, $900K contract.

He still needs 24 more NHL games this season to keep his RFA status; if he doesn’t get there, he’ll become a Group Six unrestricted free agent in July.

This year, Hunt had actually started as a regular, skating in 11 straight games to open the season. He hasn’t recorded a point yet, but he does have 11 blocks in 14:08 a night. The move should open up a clearer path for Matt Kiersted and first-time waiver-eligible David Spacek, who now have a better chance to stick on Minnesota’s roster.

On Nashville’s side, new GM Chris MacFarland keeps reshaping the blue line. William Trudeau arrived on waivers at the start of the season, then Jayden Struble was brought in from Montreal after Trudeau went on IR. Hunt is the third fresh face on the unit in less than a month.

The Predators appear to view Hunt as a slight upgrade over Ahcan, who also joined the organization this summer on a two-year, two-way deal with an $875K AAV. Both players are undersized, but Hunt has produced more in limited NHL action.

Ahcan made the team out of training camp, yet he’s been used sparingly, appearing in only three games with one assist and just 7:36 of ice time per night. In five NHL seasons, he has one goal and three assists in 25 career games.

Teams have until 1 PM CT on Sunday to put in a claim on Ahcan.

MacFarlands Early Predators Moves Raise A Much Bigger Question

Chris MacFarland has wasted little time putting his stamp on the Predators after taking over as general manager, and the early theme is clear: get younger, add versatility, and keep the roster flexible. Nashville has already brought in pieces such as Ross Colton, Jack Drury, Mavrik Bourque and Nils Hglander, moves that suggest a front office looking to reshape the mix around a different kind of future than the one it inherited.

The bigger question is how far MacFarland will go if the standings start to slip. The Predators still have veterans on contracts that could become relevant in that scenario, and with the club trying to balance present competitiveness against long-term direction, the next stretch may determine whether these early changes are just the beginning of a broader reset or simply the first phase of a quicker turnaround.
