Phillip Danault’s start to the season is forcing a second look at a prediction that didn’t seem especially bold a month ago.
Before the season, Stu Cowan said on The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro that this would be the 33-year-old center’s final year with the Canadiens. Cowan also said he didn’t think Montreal would be upset if Danault walked away for nothing when the season ended.
Danault, who carries a $5.5 million cap hit and is in the final year of his six-year contract, has made that idea harder to defend with the way he’s opened the year.
His strong play has made it fair to ask whether Cowan still feels the same way.
Cowan’s reasoning was tied to age. At 33, he pointed to the reality that time eventually catches up with players, especially those who block shots and spend so much time in traffic, which is exactly the kind of game Danault plays.
But the early results have told a different story.
With Nick Suzuki out of the lineup, Danault’s responsibilities have expanded, and his importance to the Canadiens has become even more obvious. His performance has strengthened the case for Montreal to consider keeping him around.
Marco D’Amico believes a two-year contract extension would make perfect sense.
Cowan may have been right about one part of it, though: Danault probably wouldn’t bring back much in a trade. The return would likely be limited to a late-round draft pick, which only makes his value to the Canadiens as a player in the lineup look even greater.

Canadiens Found October Hope In One Rising Star And A New Twist In Net
October gave the Canadiens a few reasons to feel better about where theyre headed, and the biggest ones came from the familiar core and a young defenseman who kept pushing the pace. Nick Suzuki was driving the offense before injury cut into his month, while Lane Hutson continued to look like a major part of Montreals future by leading the blue line in scoring. For a team that spent the month sorting through uneven stretches, those two provided a steady reminder that the foundation is still there.
The other encouraging development came in goal, where Jacob Fowler made a strong first impression after being recalled from Laval. His arrival added a fresh layer to Montreals October story, giving the Canadiens a new look in net at a time when they needed one. The larger question now is how much of that momentum can carry forward, especially with the club still trying to turn promising individual performances into something more consistent as the season unfolds. Canadiens Keep Winning While Demidovs Absence Keeps Getting Murkier
Ivan Demidovs absence has become one of the quieter storylines around a Canadiens team that keeps finding ways to win without him. The young forward remains on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, and Montreal has not offered a recent update on where he stands, even as the calendar has moved past the original expected timeline for his return.
The uncertainty leaves the club in a familiar holding pattern: playing well, staying patient, and waiting for Demidov to work his way back into the picture. His earliest projected return is now set for Nov. 7, but for now the Canadiens are pressing on without one of their most closely watched players, and the lack of fresh information only adds to the intrigue around his recovery. Canadiens Face Another Center Decision At The Worst Time
The Canadiens are staring at another center shuffle at exactly the wrong moment, with Kirby Dach missing practice because of an illness and the lineup already unsettled heading into a game against the Winnipeg Jets. Montreal has been trying to piece together its middle down the lineup, and the uncertainty around Dach only adds to the pressure on a group that has already had to adjust on the fly.
Nick Suzukis return remains up in the air because of injury, which leaves the Canadiens with more questions than answers at a key position. Owen Beck could be asked to handle center duties again, giving Montreal a familiar stopgap while it waits for its top options to get healthy and back into the mix. [Read more 🡒]
