Patrik Laine’s name has suddenly popped up in a new place, and it’s not hard to see why the Ottawa Senators are now part of the conversation.
Ottawa general manager Steve Staios made it clear on TSN 1200 that he still wants to add a pure goal scorer, and that kind of comment naturally puts Laine on the radar. With the free-agent market already thin in that department, Laine stands out as the obvious fit if the Senators want a proven finisher without taking on major risk.
The appeal is in the price. At this point in his career, Laine likely wouldn’t command more than $1 million for one season and could even land at the league minimum. A contract like that could also come with performance bonuses, giving Ottawa some protection if things go sideways while still leaving room for Laine to earn more if he produces.
That setup would keep the gamble small for the Senators and still give them a chance to boost their power play with a dangerous shooter. Staios said he wants scoring, and Laine remains one of the few available names who fits that description.
The talent hasn’t disappeared. Laine helped the Canadiens make the playoffs in 2025 with 20 goals in 52 games, including 15 on the power play. Even with his issues at even strength and the injury problems that have followed him for years, his value on the man advantage is still very real.
His last full season came in 2018-19, and those limitations are part of the package. But if Ottawa is looking for a low-cost swing at a pure scorer, Laine makes sense as a possible fit on the top power-play unit.
